I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade an Nfusion HD (or any FTA/STB) so that AVI files can be played? I just bought my first FTA (the NfusionHD) and am having fun playing with all the features.

I can view jpeg and bmap files from a USB drive and according to manual play Mpeg2 files, so I was curious can these receivers be flashed with new software updates that would allow other formats such as AVI to play?

AVI files come in way too many flavors (and more than a few aren't AVI files at all). You would probably be better served to convert them to a generic MPEG format.

Well, that presupposes the FTA company stays in business...
It presupposes development money goes into a finished product (which it did during the hacker years, but not so much any more)...

Brent already beat me to the comment that the AZbox plays all sorts of files.
Around $300 or so, and receives most all formats. - :up

And, I have a Amazon.com: Philips DVP5992 1080p HDMI Upscaling DVD Player with USB 2.0 and DivX Ultra: Electronics upconverting DVD player with USB, that'll play many (but not all) formats which are 720x576 or below.
This includes DivX, XviD, some MP4, etc. . . but not MKV container.
And it won't play anything of higher def, due to hardware limitations.
But then, it was only about $40

The first generation WDTV media players (not the Live or Live Plus, which add ethernet connectivity) are sometimes available for around $50, and they'll play almost anything you throw at them.
