Before today, I had one dish pointed at 110/119 with a wing at 61.5 for hd. They came and upgraded me today so I could get hd locals, removing the small dish pointed at 61.5 and replacing it with a 1000.4 dish pointed at the 61.5/72/77. The dish pointed at 110/119 was left in order to add international programming. Two questions -First off, I now have hd locals, but no longer have sd locals. Is this a trade-off or should I be receiving locals in both hd and sd? And -2, if I wanted to add Eurochannel, do I need any special type of dish and/or lnb or can I use the existing 110/119 dish still located on the roof and run the line into the fourth input on the 1000.4? Thanks in advance for any info.

In reference to Internationals:

If the 110/119 dish you have is a Dish 500, then NO, that will not suffice for internationals. Internationals are at the 118.7 location which is a FSS Ku band satellite. FSS is operated at lower power than DBS, so a larger dish is needed to receive sufficient signal strength for reliability. If you want Internationals, you will need the larger dish that is marked Dish 500 Plus or Dish 1000 or Dish 1000 Plus or Dish 1000.2 or Dish 1000.4 or (I hope I was correct on all the markings Dish has on all the equipment) essentially, any dish that is described as capable of receiving Dish services at 118.

Since 118.7 is an FSS Ku band satellite, you will not be able to receive channels from that location using a DBS LNBF. Dish's solution is their dual-band LNBF that receives both 119 and 118.7 simultaneously using ONE LNBF for both 119 and 118. You would only need to connect the port from 118, and leave the 119 port unconnected for an EA system. I believe you can purchase an LNBF from a third party that can also do the job of just looking at 118.7, but you must be careful as many of these are legacy and will not work with DishPro equipment. So, unless you are really an expert at this, you safest bet is to get Dish's dual-band LNBF that you know will work properly with the system.

Since you are on the EA, you will need a separate Dish to look at 118.7. However, if one of your LNBF's at the EA has an input port for an additional LNBF at a second dish, that may be a solution, depending upon how many STB's and if any external switches are part of your system. You could still just run the additional cable form the 118 to, based upon your install, to an external switch that you may need.

The time to add Internationals was when you had this current install/upgrade. It probably would not have cost that much extra. If you try to add Eurochannel now, through Dish, you will pay a pretty good amount of money for it. After a year, you could try to add Eurochannel as an upgrade, and the price may be greatly discounted, but it will require a commitment. If you want to DIY it, you can do that, but an external DPP44 alone at full retail is just about as much as you would pay--or even more-- today to just have Dish come back out and do everything to get you Eurochannel. And we haven't even factored in the cost of the FSS Ku LNBF, yet. So, you may have to shop around at Ebay for this make economic sense, at this point. Try going on line to the Dish Store or other on-line Dish retailer and look around and you will see the equipment necessary there.

Thanks for the information. When the installer was at the house, I asked him about the internationals and he said he didn't know anything about that satellite and that I would have to get someone else to do it. Since dishnetwork scheduled the upgrade and sent out the installer, I am a bit confused about why he didn't know anything about it. But he told me he did not work for dish and was just a subcontractor. I'll call dish and see if they can help me our and not charge me an outragous price. Thanks again for the information.

I recently had to switch from a 1000.2 to a 1000.4 (EA) because of LOS problems. I also lost my SD locals but that was a fair trade off for me as I get 'em in HD both from Dish & OTA. My system is now reliable even in heavy rain as opposed to being lousy before in light rain, except in the winter when the trees were bare.
