Basic Voom Questions (not answered elsewhere)

I was looking at the FAQ posted here and couldn't find answers to these questions. I am a current dish customer who's contract is about to run out. I am also moving, so it seems like a perfect chance to start using my HDTV

1. What states is Voom available in?
2. What is the monthly programming cost?
3. What is the current deal for installation, equipment, programming? (The website is not giving up that info right now)?
4. Is there only one receiver available? I have a SDTV as a second TV, but I don't want to have to spend for an HDTV receiver.

Thanks.

Lou

Another question:

Is there any reduction in price if I already have an OTA antenna installed and don't need their's?

#1 - CONUS
#2 - 39 bucks
#3 - $0 installation and 10 bucks a month STB rental.
#4 - only one receiver at this time.

No reduction from $0 if OTA antenna already installed.

Lou4Gehrig,

Welcome! Take a look at this map that gives you all the spotbeams of rainbow 1, the satellite that VOOM uses.

Spotbeam On Rainbow 1

The spotbeam map has NO correspondance to the CONUS beams that are in use. The spotbeams capabilities of the satellite are not being used.

So are the CONUS beams in use covering entire US or are there parts of the US left out (Alaska and Hawaii will be out, is that a fair assumption?).

Voom Questions

Which satellite do they run off of? 61.5, 110, 119

Can you use a DishNet LNB to pick them up?

Is there a contact to sign with the new lease deal?

Is the HD on all channels true HD or not as good?

Reason I ask:

Got an 811 for dishnet....love watching the HD, but not much of it right now....

Entry cost for Voom is cheaper now....

Have a quad LnB with a port open.....hmmm

Have DVI available on TV....3 receivers on one tv....wow! That will really confuse the wife.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, depending on your setup. Do not use the Dish switch.

Future Voomer...question???

I just got off the phone with CSR @ Voom who went through the whole picture with me. The $0 down and $9.50 per month without a contract sounds very, very good...!!!

Now the question...he mentioned that the Dish and OTA Antenna would be connected with a diplexar..."so the installer would only make one hole through the wall".

Please tell me if this is good or can I tell them to do it another way. What is the best connection possible for a Mits 55WS413 that has component, HDTV and DVI inputs?

TIA!!!

No, it's bad :). You do not want the diplexer, and have every right to tell them not to use it. DVI is the best connection always, as it is pure digital.

Check around for threads on the install, the diplexer is to be avoided!

I own a Sammy HDTV and it looks better to me when connected with DVI. The new VOOM installs are supposed to be done with separate lines - no diplexer and are supposed to include a DVI cable in the package.

Voom Azimuth? Sat Location?

Sorry if this has been answered but I have deceided to Voom but want to be sure my line of sight is clear before I call. I have Directv and get a 95-99 signal. But I do have a lot of trees around my house. Is there a simple way to determine azimuth like D* and E* have where you type in your zipcode. Mine is 30033 if anyone can help.

Thanks!

No Diplexer

Avoid the diplexer. Depending on your location, the dish could be mounted in a totally different location than your OTA antenna. It is best to run seperate lines from each of them, and not to combine the signals. If the number of holes in your wall is an issue, they can feed both lines through the same hole, but keep the signals seperate.

A lot of diplexer bashing here and I am not so sure it is founded. My personal experience has proven that a GOOD diplexer will alter neither satellite nor OTA signal quality. These are not subject observations on my part, but provable objective measures read directly from the receiver.

In other words, my receiver displayed a signal strength of 76 with or WITHOUT a diplexer in the mix. Having said all of that, I have noticed satellite signal degradation ONLY when I used Dish. A good diplexer (i.e. Terk) did not affect Direct satellite signal quality.

I would be curious to know which brands of diplexers were used by VOOM'ers that were unsuccessful.

You can download this little application that will let you figure out the direction. The V* sat is in the same slot as the E* 61.5.

This is what I got when I put in your zip:
Azimuth = 145
Elevation = 44
