Product Spotlight: Altelix

There’s nothing so incredibly sexy about enclosures. Or at least that’s probably what you’re thinking. But I want to tell you about Altelix enclosures. They’re one of our biggest sellers at Solid Signal, and there’s a reason: Altelix enclosures are that good.

What’s the big deal about enclosures?

An enclosure is, at its heart, a box. That’s all it is. But it’s a special kind of box, customized for what you need. And if you didn’t have such a box, most of modern life would just stop working. Because, there are two facts about our modern world that conflict with each other, and an enclosure is the way to reconcile them.

Fact 1: Electronics work best in very specific situations.

Today’s modern world is made possible by computer chips. It is mind-boggling to think that roughly 60 years ago, there were -zero- computer chips in the world. A hundred years ago, there were no computers of any kind, not as we understand them. That’s a tiny bit of time in the 20,000 years that humans have been living in civilized groups, and yet we take computer chips for granted.

A computer chip is essentially a very fancy maze where electricity runs in predictable patterns. By controlling the way electricity goes through the maze, we can store very small numbers and manipulate them. As you stack up these small numbers and small manipulations, you can do ever more complex things. Eventually you get to the point where about 500 different mazes and about 10,000,000,000 numbers combine roughly 3,000,000,000 times a second and that’s what makes it possible for me to see the letters I’m typing right now.

While it’s amazing that any of that works at all for any reasonable period of time, it’s possible because we understand how to do it all reliably. We know that computer chips work best when they are in a particular temperature range, and when their environment is free from a lot of dust and dirt that could mess up the electricity flow. That’s why a lot of electronics are sealed up and those that aren’t have fans and filters.

Fact 2: Outdoors is a complicated and messy place.

Obviously the outside world is full of dust, dirt, water, and all sort of things that electronic connections hate. It gets very hot outdoors sometimes, and sometimes it gets very cold. There are animals and even misguided people who could accidentally damage things left outside. But of course you know that.

What you tend not to think about is the way that the outdoor life could affect those delicate balances of electricity and motion that make all modern life possible. Even a sealed device will eventually get cold or wet enough to fail if it’s left outdoors. That is, unless there’s something that acts as a barrier between the outdoors and those electronics.

That’s where Altelix comes in.

Altelix does it all.

If you look at the great selection of Altelix parts at Solid Signal, You’ll see everything from inexpensive mounting kits to this utterly fancy thing shown above. It’s a box, yes. But it’s a box that provides power, ventilation, and weather resistance in a predictable way. That’s worth paying for.

Altelix enclosures are meant for people who really need to make sure their stuff works all the time. Think of the companies that operate cell towers, or the internet connections we all rely on. Think of marine riggers who need to make sure that sensitive equipment can withstand life on the ocean. Or, perhaps think of the people who are protecting the world in sensitive military operations across the world. Altelix keeps their equipment safe, so they can keep you safe.

When you think about it, that’s a pretty lofty thing for a simple box to be doing. And that’s what Altelix does. They do it very well, in fact.

Need a weather-rated enclosure?

Shop at Solid Signal for weather-rated enclosures of all different sixes and shapes. Some will let you feed power into them, some will let you withstand extreme temperatures. If you’re thinking of putting something electronic into an outdoor space, think of putting it in an Altelix enclosure.
