Is there a guide to the current proper way to make a coax cable?

It appears I might be doing it wrong. I was trying to hookup a DPP44 switch. The green light on the power brick would go out the second I connected one of my coax cables to the power inserter. Once I removed the coax, the green light would come back on. I am guessing their is a bad connection in my coax cable. I tried 4 different cables I made. I then tried another cable that was store bought and already had the coax ends attached and this cable seems to be fine. The green light would stay on with it.

So what is the 2016 proper way to do this?

A heat gun helps too after doing this many connections :)
