Besides the obvious difference in the hard drive what are the differences between the PS3 40, 60 and 80 GB drives? It seems to me the PS3 40 GB doesn't come packed with a controller! Does the 40 GB version play bluray as well as the others?

Big difference is the 60GB has hardware backward compatibility for games. The 80GB has software backward compatibility and the 40GB has no backward compatibility. I also beleive that the 40GB model has few less USB ports available. Every PS3 plays Blu-Ray movies.

If you have a lot of PS2 games and want to play them on the PS3 you need the 60GB model. The 80GB one can play a lot of the games. The 40GB will not play PS2 games at all. If you have trouble finding a 60GB new you can try to get a used one at like gamestop and save some money.

The disk inside is a notebook drive and is pretty easy to upgrade to whatever size you want if you are worried about space.
