Question About TWC HD DVR

I just got the SA 8300 HDC. It makes a noise like a computer, not the fan or anything but like when a computer loads. Is this normal? Also when will they be upgrading the HD DVR's to something that actually has a good design behind it? It just seems that Scientific Atlanta just threw sh*t into a box and called it a DVR.
