[VOOM] Connecting Voom to phone line

All,

When the Voom installer did our installation he told us that we don't
need to have the phone line hooked up since there was nothing that it
was used for. From reading a little on here it looks like I need
that to get firmware/software updates.

A quick question to everyone.

How does it work if the voom box is connected to a remote phone hook
up box that plugs into a power outlet? We don't have a phone
connection near enough to the voom box. I did this with Direct TV
and it was sometimes a little hit & miss.

Also, when we had the phone line hook up via this manner then the
caller ID feature did not work on Direct TV. Has anyone else got
their phone line connected to one of these power outle phone jacks
(not sure what the proper name for these are and I hope y'all
understand what I mean) and to Voom and have Caller ID working?

I just spent $35 on remote phone jack (RCA type) and while I got a dial tone
using a handheld phone, the Voom receiver doesn't see it. I'm gonna have to
pay someone to run a line to the tv :(

Voom didn't used to use the phone line.. but they are beginning to and if
you don't have one connected, you may lose service some time in the future.

If you don't have your Voom box connect to a phone jack, the caller ID will not work. Also , I believe, Voom does periodically check to see if the receiver is connect to the phone line. Once Voom gets its pay preview channels up, you will need to have the phone line connected.

So if you have 4 boxes do they all have to be hooked to a phone line
?? This seems a little much and I don't have 4 outlets to use for
every box.

I'm assuming this will be only to utilize the PPV service. Why would
you need the phone line otherwise? I'm getting installed Tuesday and
have no clue whether Voom will work with my VoIP phone. My TiVo
Series 1 works fine but my TiVo Series 2 has fits with it. I was just
writing off PPV and hoping I don't need a phone line. I've never had
one connected to my DISH box.
