[VOOM] I had no choice but to disconnet

I honestly liked VOOM a lot. but I had no choice but to disconnect
my service today. What did it was the OTA reception of the local
channels. I live in Austin ,texas and getting the local FOX channel
was next to impossible alhtough i was 9 miles away from the station
tower. I could have lived without the FOX channel, but this is my
wife's favorite, i could no longer stand her nagging me to change
back to cable. To VOOM's credit, they tried their best with a new
antenna but still to no avail. infact with the new improved antenna,
i also lost reception of the NBC channel. VOOMs customer service
offered to try again when i called to disconnect , but i knew it was
just a waste of time. I also experienced rain fade , heck it was
total disconnect even if it was only drizzling. Still VOom is a
great buy if you can recieve your local channels and do not have a
problem with rain fades. I hope VOOM improves OTA reception so i can
sign up again in the future.

[VOOM] Cancelling VOOM/OTA

I just go bananas when someone cancels VOOM because of OTA problems.
It means that your misdirected focus is on a minority of OTA channels and
not VOOM"s plethora of non-commercial HD channels.
I told my installer to forget the OTA antenna. Last April, when I had VOOM
installed, I knew the OTA attempt was not optimum. Even here in San Diego,
I knew that I would need a mast, rotor and an above average antenna. As
critical as digital reception is, I knew the supplied antenna could not
perform adequately. Physical impossibility.
I've since bought the biggest Wineguard HD-UHF with amp, a 20 ft mast, and
I have 3 rotors to play with. If I still have OTA problems, I'll pick up a
Samsung OTA Tuner I can program, since picking up Los Angeles HD is my
goal.
But don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. Besides Desperate
Housewives and Boston Legal, I find OTA to be a turn-off because of the
commercials. I still take Digital Cable for all those "other channels".
VOOM was never meant to be all things to all people. The OTA part was
definitely problematic from the start.
Don't take VOOM unless you are a non-commercial HD freak. OTA is merely a
possible gift if you live in the right spot. No guarantees.
Live with it!

RE: [VOOM] Cancelling VOOM/OTA

The price of Voom puts it in the same ballpark as cable/sat competition. It
is not marketed as a place to get HD in addition to your other provider. It
is seriously lacking in the channels we watch. I kept it for five months.
I loved the pQ, and the OTA reception was great; however the constant
billing problems, empty promises of a DVR, and the lack of key channels for
us drove me away.

To top it all off, Voom finally got the billing info straight and hit my
credit card for five months of service at once. Thanks a lot for that one.
The card has a $300 limit *rolleyes*.

I'll consider coming back when they have stable equipment, a DVR, and a real
selection of channels. A bunch of HD channels playing old movies I care
nothing about isn't enough for me. I never watched any of the HD original
channels because there was never anything worth watching on them. How many
times can you watch "high definition" movies from the 50's and 60's?

Chris Green"

You are completely wrong about the 50's and 60's as the selection includes movies from 2000, 2001, 2002, 1990's 1980's and so on. Speak for yourself as these movies are "gold" compare to the type of movies that are being made today. There are a bunch of people that would like to see these movies (me included). If you did not like them, that's why you have the premium channels like HBO, Cinemax, Starz, TMC, Showtime and Encore. All in HD to watch the most recent movies.

And I get all those channels in HD from my local provider. Voom was great,
but they weren't offering any kind of bargain or giving me something I
needed which I could not get anywhere else. Combine that with the buggy
software causing hangs, PG loss, etc. and it was no longer worth it.

I am using Time Warner in Houston. Its not the greatest, but it is a dual
tuner HD DVR. I like to keep my options open. No contract and its only and
extra $4/mo for the DVR. Hopefully Voom offers a similar model when its
released. If so, and they get the other channels, I may likely be back.

I had Time Warner for 3 years before I switched to Voom, with over 8 months
of that on HD. I never had any problems with them unless there was a major
outage. I switched to Voom for the extra HD channels giving up HGTV and
Food Networks, both of which we watch constantly. Our kiddo has appreciated
having Noggin back as well.

Chris, good luck to you. Each of us has to decide for himself what's the best overall package. I predict you will be back to VOOM if they stay around and if not VOOM another satellite provider.
I did see a broadband package that includes cable TV, hi speed internet access, and all inclusive free long distance phone service. My friend in NJ picked this up for $129.
I'm not likely to have that around here in the Upstate NY sticks but that seemded like a particularly good deal. it even included premiums.

Chris, you said "I get all those channels in HD from my local provider"

Wrong answer. Time Warner Cable only provides HBO & Showtime in HD. (4)
channels.

Here is Time Warner Cable's complete HD lineup ;

290 HDNET (HD Plus)
291 HDNET Movies (HD Plus)
298 HDTV - INHD (Digital Value)
299 HDTV - INHD2 (Digital Value)
301 HDTV - Discovery (Standard)
308 HDTV - KUHT PBS 8 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
309 HDTV - KRIV FOX 26 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
311 HDTV - KHOU CBS 11 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
312 HDTV - KPRC NBC 2 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
313 HDTV - 13HD1 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
460 HDTV - HBO (Premium HDTV)
461 HDTV - HBO West (Premium HDTV)
462 HDTV - Showtime (Premium HDTV)
463 HDTV - Showtime West (Premium HDTV)

Voom provides the following HD Movie channels ;

HBO ( 2 )
CINEMAX ( 2 )
SHOWTIME ( 2 )
MOVIECHANNEL ( 1 )
STARZ ( 2 )
ENCORE ( 1 )

...for a total of ( 10 ) HD movie channels.

So you're statement that you get all the HD movie channels with Time Warner
Cable is far short of the truth.

... Not to mention TNT, Bravo, ESPN, UPN, WB & the 21 originals that show A
LOT more than 50's & 60's movies.

Like you Chris, I also live in the Houston Area so I know full well what the
options are and to compare VOOM's offerings with Time Warner Cable is like
comparing a GRAPEFRUIT to a PEA.

Last, I have no problem with anyone leaving one company for another. Best of
luck to ya all the way man, but don't be spiteful and disseminate half
truths and flat out bad information.

Our kiddo has appreciated
having Noggin back as well.

many

Chris Green"

You are completely wrong about the 50's and 60's as the selection
includes movies from 2000, 2001, 2002, 1990's 1980's and so on. Speak
for yourself as these movies are "gold" compare to the type of movies
that are being made today. There are a bunch of people that would
like to see these movies (me included). If you did not like them,
that's why you have the premium channels like HBO, Cinemax, Starz, TMC,
Showtime and Encore. All in HD to watch the most recent movies.

Robert,
Interesting post. With VOOM, OTA locals, and 4DTV HD ( big dish) I am getting everything on your list except HDNet and INHD. Am I missing much with those two?
I also don't get HD TMC or Cinemax just SD but that's less of a big deal to me since they usually wind up with the same movies on HBO and Showtime at some point
Thegrod.

Chris, you said "I get all those channels in HD from my local provider"

Wrong answer. Time Warner Cable only provides HBO & Showtime in HD. (4)
channels.

Here is Time Warner Cable's complete HD lineup ;

290 HDNET (HD Plus)
291 HDNET Movies (HD Plus)
298 HDTV - INHD (Digital Value)
299 HDTV - INHD2 (Digital Value)
301 HDTV - Discovery (Standard)
308 HDTV - KUHT PBS 8 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
309 HDTV - KRIV FOX 26 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
311 HDTV - KHOU CBS 11 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
312 HDTV - KPRC NBC 2 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
313 HDTV - 13HD1 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
460 HDTV - HBO (Premium HDTV)
461 HDTV - HBO West (Premium HDTV)
462 HDTV - Showtime (Premium HDTV)
463 HDTV - Showtime West (Premium HDTV)

Voom provides the following HD Movie channels ;

HBO ( 2 )
CINEMAX ( 2 )
SHOWTIME ( 2 )
MOVIECHANNEL ( 1 )
STARZ ( 2 )
ENCORE ( 1 )

..for a total of ( 10 ) HD movie channels.

So you're statement that you get all the HD movie channels with Time Warner

If there's spite its probably due to the credit card problem they generated
with their terrible billing by just not billing me each month and then
calling me to, yet again, tell me that they didn't have a valid cc on file
then suddenly one day billing me successfully.

I don't subscribe to the premiums (HBO, Etc). From your list, I'm missing
out on BravoHD and TNT HD. I get ESPN HD through Time Warner (not on your
list) and I get UPN/WB HD off the OTA just like I did on Voom.

Time Warner has one MAJOR disadvantage..... Analog channels.... They look
like crap compared to the Voom digital broadcast. I'll take that though in
order to see HGTV and FoodTV. The Time Warner box lets me upconvert them to
480P to fit my 4:3 TV full screen while still passing through my 1080i
untouched. It even let me tell it that I can't support 720p so that 720p is
upconverted to 1080i automatically.

As I said before, I have my faith that Voom will get their stuff together.
I'm going to use my wishful thinking to assume that they are learning from
the equipment/software problems and revisiting the DVR completely to ensure
that these features are solid in the new product. That will likely bring me
back. Until then, it cost me nothing to leave since it was free install and
no contract, and I got a free OTA antenna out of the deal.

Chris, are you saying that you have hooked up the cable from your OTA
antenna to Time Warner Cable's box so you can record over the air channels
on your DVR ?

If the answer is yes, how does it work with twc's own local channel lineup?

Chris, you said "I get all those channels in HD from my local provider"

Wrong answer. Time Warner Cable only provides HBO & Showtime in HD. (4)
channels.

Here is Time Warner Cable's complete HD lineup ;

290 HDNET (HD Plus)
291 HDNET Movies (HD Plus)
298 HDTV - INHD (Digital Value)
299 HDTV - INHD2 (Digital Value)
301 HDTV - Discovery (Standard)
308 HDTV - KUHT PBS 8 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
309 HDTV - KRIV FOX 26 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
311 HDTV - KHOU CBS 11 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
312 HDTV - KPRC NBC 2 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
313 HDTV - 13HD1 (Basic) (Voom OTA Antenna Channel)
460 HDTV - HBO (Premium HDTV)
461 HDTV - HBO West (Premium HDTV)
462 HDTV - Showtime (Premium HDTV)
463 HDTV - Showtime West (Premium HDTV)

Voom provides the following HD Movie channels ;

Stan Sexton said:
I just go bananas when someone cancels VOOM because of OTA problems.
It means that your misdirected focus is on a minority of OTA channels and
not VOOM"s plethora of non-commercial HD channels.

Stan I disagree. There is far more new HD content available OTA each week than there is on all VOOM channels combined. If you flip through all the VOOM exclusive channels at any given moment you see quite a few commercials (for other VOOM channels). I guess once a movie starts it continues without interruption but what do you do when it ends at an odd time (which the program guide has rounded to the nearest half hour)?

No.. I wish. I cannot DVR the WB/UPN. Maybe Tivo will eventually offer a
cablecard HD DVR. (dream on)

Chris, are you saying that you have hooked up the cable from your OTA
antenna to Time Warner Cable's box so you can record over the air channels
on your DVR ?

If the answer is yes, how does it work with twc's own local channel lineup?

My scheduled deinstall date is this Friday between 2
and 5. I just received a call from the company
informing me that the new install procedure is to come
and pick up the receivers and leave the dish and
cable! The nice lady then stated that she could swing
by today to do that if I would be home.

Now how ironc is that! they are want to come early to
do the deinstall! I wish that my inital install was
this smooth!
Well since both of the receivers are fubar! I am not
in a big hurry to get them out. My deinstall is Friday
and thats the time I am taking off from work, NOT
today! So anyone else having this type of deinstall
also? I guess they feel that I am going to be back
some time soon! :O

I also got the Comcast cable coming at the same time
:D might have a cat fight ;) or even might be the same
person!! oh! Just to brag! I'm getting the digital
platinum package and two (2) Motorola Dual-Tuner DVR
High-Definition Set-Top DCT6412!!!! They are brand new
and I cannot wait for the fun to start with these
puppies! I just hope they are not like my voom
receivers and all the problems that we have seen. HDTV
and no rain fade! and they are giving me a years
discount for my cable modem as I am switching from
DSL! now how about that!

[VOOM] Re: I had no choice but to disconnet

People who disconnect their VOOM service are no cry babies, Poeple
who disconnect their service are really sending VOOM a wake up call!
There is some thing wrong and needs to be fixed!

1. True some people do not care about OTA channels. But i like to
watch my local news broadcasts why should I pay over 50 dollars for
a monthly fee and not get what i was promised for prior to instal? I
suppose Voom should make it clear from the beginning that you may
not receive all OTA channels. I knew that only after the install was
finished.

2. High definitions channels? WHat HD channels? I liked RAVE but it
was so repetetive that i came to the point where i just do not
expect anything new on that channel. All the rest of the non movie
channels are really useless to me. what is so interesting about some
one jumping up and down with skates? THe only reason I watched HDN
was to look at that blond anchor woman .. i think she is attractive.
I am going to miss her!

3. the movie channels have older films that i have already seen or
really do not care to see. I recieve movies from netflix why would i
even want to watch these older movies? i am sure a lot of other
people value these channels. in any case these channels need to be
less repetetive.

4. rain fades were a problem. They happened even at the weekest of
storms. this needs to be fixed.

5. reciever lock-ups , i just hated pressing that red button to
reboot the system.

6. WHy does it cost 15$ to add HBO? Time wanrner cable here in
Austin offers all HBO channels for 6$.

I really still do like Voom and i hope In a year they can resolve
these issues so i can once more re-sign with them. Why a year?
cause time warner offered me all the digital channels+HD
reciever+all local channels including their local all news channel+
InHD and HDNET and 6 months of showtime for less than 45$. And since
i subscribe to their cable internet i got a reduction on my internet
access fee.

RE: [VOOM] Re: I had no choice but to disconnet

I agree about the wakeup call. The subscriber base is small enough that a
person leaving should not be ignored. I spent 15-20 minutes giving the CSR
a detailed list of why I was leaving and asked her to make sure that
information got to the appropriate people. I did not get the impression
that it would go anywhere beyond her ear though, but I emailed a similar
list to Wilt about a week ago. Hopefully someone within Voom was willing to
listen to that.
