OK I think my R15 died....wont power up all the time and the remote doesnt work 1/2 the time...think the sensor is bad

I own the R15..bought at a goodwill store and added it 3 months ago or so. I mainly use it as a backup when I have more than 2 things to record (R22 is the main) so I really dont need it but its nice to have a backup but I could just cancel it.

If I call D* and tell them its dead (wont power up) I know they'll replace it but what will they charge me? $20? (no protection plan)
I assume it will be another R15 or maybe R16 (which is better?)
I know the new one is leased but it shouldnt extend my agreement right?
Also will they ship it to the "billed" address as I "moved"?

and yeah I know I have to ship the old one back....

thanks guys

According to the chart up in the stickies, replacing an owned receiver with a leased one without a protection plan extends the contract.

I can comment on the shipping. I moved too and they asked me which address I wanted it shipped to: billing or service.

but it says "equipment swap with anything but failure" yes
so if the reciever is dead this should be replaced with no extension

I also have a dead receiver with the protection plan. When I called, directv told me since I had the receiver for years, it's now considered owned and owned receivers are not covered under the protection plan. I would have to extend my contract to have it replaced. I think this sucks. I didn't know they "convert" leased receivers after a set amount of time.

If I'm reading it correctly, the first two rows (Protection Plan/No Protection Plan) are regarding equipment failures. So an owned receiver not under protection plan will be swapped with a leased receiver and the contract extended.

They don't. They retain ownership of all leased equipment and you have to return it when you cancel, no matter how old it is. The person you talked to is stupid.

It was a leased receiver, but they told me because it's old ( about 5 years ) it was considered owned. I asked what good the protection plan was. I guess I'll have to play customer service roulette again.

Pick up Pro Plan first that way even if you just keep it for a month or you the replacement will be marked as Owned vs leased as they will replace it but the new box will marked as leased with out pro plan

Instead of creating a new thread, I think this one is well positioned for my problem.

My HR20-100 is in its last days if not hours. About 6 months ago it did the scan of the hard drive because of a serious problem.
This took forever, but has been fine up until about two weeks ago. It has done 6 - 8 reboots, one of which required the RBR to bring it back. Now it is in its 24th hour of scanning the drive again.

I know I can probably get a replacement from DirecTV for the cost of shipping, but would really like to replace it with the HR24. We all know that getting a specific model from DirecTV is near impossible. So I plan to obtain one from an online source.

I plan to call DirecTV to activate the HR24 and tell them it is a replacement for a failed HR20. Any chance that I could get a few credits since if I asked them for a replacement it would be the cost of shipping? I don't plan to go with the PP for a month as I want the HR24.

What are the chances they won't want the HR20 returned? I don't know when it was put into service, but it was around the time the HR20 was first introduced.

1. Yes we always want the equipment back
2. Depends on your history if we give you credit
3. Your locals should be active by the end of November pm me about your setup.

It's kinda weird that they'd want a broken owned receiver back.

If it was me I'd argue about it. I OWN it, I shouldn't have to sent it back to them.

If you report it as broken they'll deactivate it, it's not like you can keep on using it.

My GF's Dad had a leased receiver go bad recently.
He called DIRECTV and got a new one sent out for $20.
They told him to keep the broken one.
They suggested he cut off the power cord and take it to a local recycler.

My HR20 is doing its second scan in 4 days.
So, I just went and ordered the HR24 from SolidSignal.
Once i get it, then I'll negotiate with DirecTV when I active the HR24 and deactivate the HR20.

Thanks to stonecold for his PM.

Want to make a bet I just had to clear NRF fees off a customers account becasue he tosss 2 D10s

Hence I said "Hardly" b/c I cannot over see every D10 box. I get calls from customers weekly asking what to do with their D10 box b/c D* sent prepaid boxes for all other recvrs but not the D10's.

Wasn't calling you out, just throwing my view but if you take the ratio of D10 keeps vs send backs of the customers I come across then yes I'll take that bet.

Update for anyone who may be interested.

I ordered the HR24 from SolidSignal and received it today.
I noticed on the DirecTV site that there was a place to activate a receiver.
But, when I tried I got an error that there was no receiver listed to be activated.
I called to activate and the CSR mentioned the online activation.
Bottom line was that this feature only works if the receiver was obtained from DirecTV.
Anyway, the DVR is activated and the HR20 is deactivated.
No joy for getting a credit for a replacement since I didn't get one through DirecTV.
No matter, I now have the HR24 up and running and it is light speed faster than the HR23. :D
The unit updated to 0418 software and I have the AM21 connected to it.

MRV is working fine. Just waiting for the guide data to fill in so I can set up the series links.

well its dead....wont power up and RBR & pull power cord didnt help

Called D* and they were going to ship me one but then had to transfer me to technical support. Gave them the info and what I did and they are gonna ship me a replacement. I made sure they sent it to the billing address

I did have some humor when talking to the cs rep. She asked me which receiver and I said "R15". They show that on file as bedroom but both receivers are in same room. I said "OK the one that is working the receiver ID ends in XXXX". The rep says "so the one that doesnt power on ends in XXXX" to which I said "since I cant power it on I cant check the receiver number". :D
The tech rep mentioned it was added in August which sounds right.

Now they want me to ship it back even though I "own" it (bought it for 5 bucks at goodwill) and they said there was no charge to ship it out. I dont have the protectino plan but hey thats ok by me :)
