Is this just like unplugging the hopper, or is unplugging the only sure way for a good reset?

The reset button is probably the safer way to reboot, as your not going to generate a power surge which can be done sometimes when unplugging and pluggins something in.

I use the Red Button to reboot. Although its rare for me to use it. :)

I'd say the RESET button is equivalent to the old "hold POWER button until it starts to reboot" way of doing things. I believe the RESET button is a wise move from Dish to make the RESET/REBOOT process EASY for the non-techie to see and do. There are TONS of mere mortals (meaning NOT power users) who have NO IDEA one can press POWER and hold it to reboot a Dish box and fix the most common problems. The red RESET button was a great move by Dish because it is far more intuitive. I would not rush to a "cold reboot" of unplugging the device unless as a near last resort. As Scott said, the RESET button should suffice 99% of the time.
