seen one up in flames a while back no thanks
They just broke Embargo on the Rivian R2, and you saw "one up in flames a while back". Excuse me if I don't believe that.

It's more likely you saw a Hyundai burning, as there are millions of those under Recall for a faulty ABS module that can catch fire:

Well, so far the only vehicles I've seen in flames over my half-century of driving have been pickup trucks, so I guess that means I'm justified in not buying one.😁

Key Vehicle Overview & Specs

  • Battery & Architecture: Features an 88 kWh usable (low 90s gross) structural battery pack using large 4695 cylindrical cells. It operates on a 400V system architecture, allowing it to DC fast charge from 10% to 80% in about 29 minutes 03:01 Opens in a new window .
  • Powertrain & Performance: Launches in the top-end performance trim producing 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, delivering a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds (via future launch control software). It targets 330 miles of EPA range 12:43 Opens in a new window .
  • Pricing & Warranty: Starts at $57,990 (excluding a $1,495 destination charge) 13:21 Opens in a new window . It includes a 4-year/50,000-mile comprehensive warranty and an 8-year/120,000-mile battery/drive unit warranty 14:22 Opens in a new window .
  • Base Model Note: A base model starting around $45,000 will launch later with a physically depopulated, smaller-capacity version of the same battery pack 01:39:30 Opens in a new window .

On-Road & Highway Driving Impressions

  • Powertrain Integration: Unlike the Rivian R1 (which defaults to front-wheel drive), the R2 uses a rear-axle primary drive system with a quick-disconnect permanent magnet motor up front. This results in a significantly more premium, sporty, and rear-biased driving feel 10:15 Opens in a new window .
  • Cabin Comfort & NVH: At speeds up to 60 mph, the cabin is exceptionally quiet and solid. However, wind noise becomes quite noticeable at 75 mph 25:06 Opens in a new window , 39:02 Opens in a new window .
  • Suspension: It drops the R1's air suspension and hydraulic roll control for standard MacPherson struts with physical sway bars and a single-valve adaptive damper. It feels dynamically lighter than an R1, though minor road textures and sudden impacts filter into the cabin more clearly 05:46 Opens in a new window , 25:32 Opens in a new window .
  • Highway Autonomy: The hands-free driver-assist system functions flawlessly on the highway, though city street navigation capability is still absent at launch 39:51 Opens in a new window .

Performance & Handling Evaluation

  • Power Delivery: The throttle calibration encourages spirited driving, actively ramping up the power delivery as the vehicle gains speed rather than hitting an early peak and tapering off 44:44 Opens in a new window .
  • Brake-by-Wire Dilemma: The R2 transitions to a pure brake-by-wire system. Kyle noted that under medium-to-heavy deceleration, the software aggressively leans on rear-axle regenerative braking, causing the rear tires to drag and feel slightly unstable 47:32 Opens in a new window .
  • Handling Limits: On twisty mountain roads, the vehicle behaves like a lifted, playful hot hatch. While the steering feels somewhat insulated from tire feedback 53:51 Opens in a new window , the weight distribution makes it incredibly predictable and easy to adjust via throttle lift-off oversteer 01:00:44 Opens in a new window . Kyle strongly wishes Rivian would add a limited-slip differential to curb inside wheel spin during hard cornering 52:24 Opens in a new window .

Off-Road Testing

  • Off-Road Capability: Despite lacking mechanical locking differentials, the R2 proved remarkably robust. It features 9.6 inches of ground clearance and a water-fording depth of roughly half a meter 13:46 Opens in a new window , 01:05:12 Opens in a new window .
  • Powertrain Control: The low-speed crawling torque management is exceptionally smooth—arguably more precise at ultra-low speeds than the original R1 platform 01:12:36 Opens in a new window .
  • Brake-Based Vectoring: When navigating steep, rocky terrain with tires hanging in the air, the brake-by-wire system quickly and efficiently clamps spinning wheels to shuffle power across the open axles 01:06:50 Opens in a new window .
  • Ride Character: The lack of a sway-bar disconnect results in noticeable side-to-side "head toss" on uneven, loose trails, creating an clear market for aftermarket modifications 01:09:07 Opens in a new window .

Fast Charging & Tech Analysis

  • Fast Charging Realities: Kyle conducted an impromptu charging session at a Rivian Adventure Network station. Plugs in at 44% State of Charge (SOC) yielded a surprisingly high 187 kW charging peak on a preconditioned battery, dropping linearly to 80 kW at 80% SOC 01:27:42 Opens in a new window .
  • Electronics Overhaul: The onboard charger, DC-to-DC converter, and an 11 kW bidirectional AC inverter have all been tightly consolidated into a singular, in-house developed power electronics module ("penthouse") tucked beneath the rear seat 01:31:15 Opens in a new window .
  • Autonomy Hardware Changes: The R2 steps away from LiDAR and ultrasonic sensors entirely, choosing a leaner, more affordable radar and camera-only configuration 01:47:17 Opens in a new window .

Content and Styling Showcase

  • Cabin Amenities: Highlights include dual wireless smartphone chargers that snap into place via MagSafe 01:20:41 Opens in a new window and large dual "love box" glove compartments 01:21:38 Opens in a new window .
  • Accessories: The video tours a variety of launch wheels (19", 20", and 21" variants), interior wood/textile dashboard blocks, an integrated rear-hitch induction cooktop, and a custom rooftop tent running directly off the vehicle's power export 01:33:00 Opens in a new window .
  • Software State at Launch: While the vehicle is mechanically robust, Kyle emphasizes that its software feels slightly rushed. Essential lifestyle features like Camp Mode, Pet Mode, Keep Climate, and the Rivian Assistant are entirely absent from early production models, though all are promised in upcoming over-the-air updates 17:43 Opens in a new window , 01:56:15 Opens in a new window .

Final Takeaway

Despite nitpicking early software bugs and specific steering limitations, Kyle concludes that the R2 is an incredibly compelling, highly versatile "one-car solution" that effectively translates Rivian's adventurous brand identity into a massive, higher-volume segment 02:01:29 Opens in a new window .

We're unlikely to follow through w/ our preorder, but keeping our deposit in for now until we consider our post-EV9 options late next year.
