With Dish and Directv, the national channels (USA, TNT, HBO, SHOWTIME) are the same on there provider. Only the local channels are different. With cable, the same cable company will have the national channel (USA) as channel 123 in one city and it will be channel 456 in another city. Why? Wouldn't it be easier for a cable company to have the national channel assigned the same number across all their regions instead of having a different number for different cities?

It would make to much since for them to do that. That Is probably why they don't do it.

Cable can of course put any channel any where on their system they want.
You need to consider that most cable co where local area to begin with, they just kept getting bought up until they became just a few big companies. Most people really hate when their provider changes where a channel is located so they leave them where they where for the most part and that is why they are different in different areas.
