Yep, it was rare to have a phone jack near the TV, it was always on the other side of the room! Only exception was if they had digital cable, the cable company would always install a phone jack.
I installed Plenty of Phone Jacks for TVs as well as Computers, remember when you needed a separate line to be on the phone and the internet at the same time

And before that, it was putting in a 2nd line for the HS 'eres at the houses, they were SO Excited to have thier own phone to talk on ... that was usually a Birthday or Christmas thing. Of course you ran both numbers on the same existing jk, when you could :)

Might even leave the Parents with a 2 line splitter for the times that the jack was already wired.

Right, the standard modular phone jack had 4 pins to handle 2 lines.

So that was where DiSH was, demanding of dealers that they wire up a phone jack to plug rx into. No carrots, just the stick of the cx's bill going $5 higher if no phone connect. To me it was an all-around nuisance. To DiSH it was PPV gold. I had some cx's in the early days who ran up PPV balances on their boxes because they would just let you watch the PPVs and record them in the box. Once it hit a certain amount (like >$100) it would stop activating PPVs. The kids would then hook a phone line up to it and it would start activating PPVs again. But then a bill was on its way for the previous ones, downloaded over the phone line. Some cx's actually went into default and got their service shut off altogether because of PPV buys and an astronomical bill they couldn't or wouldn't pay.

Watching a series on ID ch. on O.J. Simpson, the footballer who was acquitted at trial of double murder, focusing on a (very) short-lived reality TV series he was trying to use as a "comeback" vehicle. At one point a few years after the trial the FBI raided his house in a money laundering investigation and all they found was that he was pirating DirecTV.

I forgot about that! The phone line was not only about PPV, but to prevent stacking. Charlie was obsessed with it, I don't remember DirecTV ever caring.

I guess you never heard of the Dish Audit Team. While on the phone you had a certain amount of time (like 30 seconds) to get the serial number off your reciever. No matter if you were blind and in a wheelchair-excuses fell on deaf ears. If you failed the box got cut off.Eventually Dish weighed the theft vs bad PR and started using other methods to deter stacking.
I hear most of them are now working for ICE. :)
i heard of the dish nazi's they get all sketch if you say you have owned boxes :biggrin

I think there may be a problem with account sharing. Giving a friend or family member the second Hopper. Can Dish tell if a Hopper is moved from the account address. I could be wrong but that is my best guess.
maybe ole charlie is getting greedy and trying to pull a dtv stunt and making people sign up for an acct per hopper

I forgot about the phone line. I canceled the home phone a few months ago and I noticed on my account that they were requesting a new phone number . They already have my cell number. I wonder how they will track you now.
