I have had DirecTV forever. For the past 2 years i have been on the up graded 5LNB slimline. I have trees in my neighborhood that are close to line of site. in the winter no leaves everything is fine. Spring . . no leave yet and i'm starting to have trouble with the HD channels. is the KA band so touchy that you have to adjust for the seasonal change in the earths tilt? Summertime is hit or miss with the leaves BUT . . the trouble is not so much the trees as it is that i have to gather all the signal from one big wide dish. I could easily find a spot to get a clear shot to the 99, 101 & 103 and then another spot to hit the 110 & 119 seems to me this would be an acceptable solution for allot of us that struggle with the touchy slimline . . has anyone heard of this? is it possible to use seperate dishs and combine the signals?

You do not have to account for the tilt of the Earth because the satellites rotate and orbit in the same spot relative to the Earth, not relative to the Sun, space, etc.

The touchiness is just because the Ka satellites are more sensitive to the things that block signal: leaves, water, etc. than the Ku satellites.

And on the last note, unfortunately there are no multi-dish solutions for Ka/Ku setups to do what you are looking for BUT..there is a 99/101/103 only LNB, so if your locals aren't on 110/119 and you aren't getting internationals from there, then just get a SLS3 LNB instead of the SLS5.

The KA band is much smaller than the KU was.
Have to adjust to "Seasonal" changes, NO.

IF you have a clear view for all ... why not go there and be done with it ?

Chances are you only need the 99, 101 and 103 at this point anyways.
The newest Dish only points at those and no longer uses the 110 and 119 unless you need channels other than the core programming.

IF you really want to use separate dishes, yes, it is possible to do.

thanks for answering so quickly. i guess my confusion is that between the winter and early spring (now) there is no change in what is 'in the way' of the dish . . so i can't understand why it works flawlessly all winter and now even on a beautiful clear day i get searching for sats on the HD channels . . as for not using 110 and 119 . . is there someplace i can look to see what is on what sat? i watch the core, the locals (east coast) all HD and and sunday ticket (quite frankly if it weren't for sunday ticket i would have left DTV a couple of years ago . . they went from the best cust serv in the busines to possibly the worst in the world . . i won't bore you with the horror stories.

Jimbo - where can i find out more about the multi dish approach?

Could something have moved your dish slightly out of optimum alignment between winter and spring? On your trees, are the buds starting to come out before the leafs big enough to cause signal loss? :)

If you're getting NYC locals then you don't need 110/119. The multi-dish solution that would allow you to get 110/119 from a separate dish is kind of pricy. I would just get the SL3 LNB and eliminate 110/119 from your setup.
