I have noticed a number of you guys mention that the dish signal meter represents quality instead of signal strength.

Would one of you that understands this difference mind explaining it to me, also, possibly how each affects rain fade differently, if at all.

Please don't flame me for not searching the net. I am asking a question where I know I will get the correct response.

Thanks.

A better signal doesn't mean you'll get better picture quality. Higher signal strength lessens the chance of rain fade affecting you.

While I appreciate the one line replies.

I would like it if someone will explain to me what signal quality represents.

From the first Google Hit on " digital signal quality ".

" ... signal quality measurements, including measurements of signal to noise ratio, bit error rate and channel multi-path distortion in addition to the signal strength. "

System and method for analyzing and displaying digital signal quality information - Patent application

These folk include S/N, bit error rate, and multipath distortion as well as signal strength. I would also suggest possibly consideration should be given to simple interference due to other signals. (although I would assume this may be rolled into bit error rate.

Applied Instruments - Educational Videos - choose "Importance of Signal Level & Quality" -

If you haven't seen this little video from Applied Instruments, it may explain better what signal quality represents more-so than the one-liners :) Basically, signal quality is how clean the signal is.
