Check out the March Sky Angel magazine. Lots of new features with the software upgrade. They said it was coming soon.

The old set top box was better because you could record with it. The "new features" will never make up for this.
Sky Angel really screwed up by not informing/warning customers about this and is either unethical or incompetent.

You still have 48 hour playback for Faith/Christian TV channels.
The new set top boxes encrypt/scramble the signals and you can NOT record to DVD at all. They slammed all of us on this because their web site still said you could record; that is, until so many of us called to complain that we couldn't. They said many different reasons why they are blocking, including that the providers were demanding it. I know that the particular stations I watch are "free-to-air" so this is NOT true.
Now they say they are testing DVR options, but many of us want DVDs for our ministries. All they have to do it stop encypting the stations.

Received this in my email today:

One misconception you may have about the Sky Angel 2.0 upgrade is that it will affect only the Sky Angel TV service.

Actually, Sky Angel 2.0 is being rolled out to both the WebTV and the TV services. One of the shared features that both platforms are going to be benefiting from is adaptive streaming. With adaptive streaming, Sky Angel 2.0 will be able to detect your bandwidth and adjust its output to eliminate the need for "retrieving." In simple terms, they'll be less, if any, freezing of the picture.

But Sky Angel 2.0 doesn't stop there. With this new system upgrade, we'll be able to launch more versions of our service for devices such as iPad® and Roku to name a few. Not only that, but you'll have the ability to get Sky Angel TV, Sky Angel WebTV and these additional services in bundled packages, making it more affordable for you to access Sky Angel programming no matter where you are.

We invite you to stay tuned as once the Sky Angel 2.0 platform is rolled out, we'll also be introducing these new services to you as we complete their development.

What form is the encryption

Some posters are saying that the output from the new Sky Angel boxes is encrypted. What form does the encryption take? Is it that the only output enabled on some or all channels is via the HDMI connector? Is it because the signal from the composite, component or s-video output connections is using the Broadcast flag or something like Macrovision encryption to prevent the recording of the program material, but does not prevent the viewing of said material on a SD or HD television using these same connections?
