It does vary where it will hit the earth, I have had issues a few times and checked the storm levels were at a lower level but had a bad scanning day. Figure it was hitting the west coast good.

For some interesting reading, Google the "1859 Carrington Event". Now that was a solar storm!

It blew out some of the telegraph services and lit up the sky with Northern Lights as far south as the Caribbean.

In the Wikipedia article it talks about some telegraph operators who were able to send and transmit with their batteries disconnected!

If a Coronal Mass Ejection like that hit Earth today it would cause much more damage. It's only a matter of time before we get another one like 1859.

"1859 Carrington Event" Did you have Dish then. I witnessed both the aurora in Trinity, Texas on March 13, 1989 and one out near McDonald Observatory on October 29, 2003. I think this new solar cycle is heading up to be big. Make sure to sign up for aurora alerts.
