Any opinions about speaker stands? I have medium sized bookshelves for fronts and they are on the ground. Does getting them up higher "really" improve AQ?
Any recommendations for inexpensive aka cheap stands?

Yes. My normal response is "experiment". Put them on a kitchen chair or a big box and listen to the result. Try to get the tweeter up to ear level from a normal listening position.

Any recommendations for inexpensive aka cheap stands?

No. Most commercial stands are horribly overpriced. You might consider hanging the speakers on the wall, or simply get a couple of appropriate sized modular cubes.
