Sports Conspiracy Theories You Believed In

I tend to believe that Michael Jordan's first retirement was reallya susension for his association with gamblers. I have no evidence to support thsi BTW I just think it is true.

Come on people, if Michael Jordan was so important to the NBA, why would they go through the trouble of "suspending him" at all? According to the theory, the NBA suspended him, but covered up the reason to protect the league and their stars' image? Come on. Jordan being off for 2 years hurt the league equally as the dirty laundry would have created.

The loss of Jordan's murdered father was the reason he left the game. Emotionally, basketball was the last thing on his mind.

How about the Yankees/Indians? Where was the conspiracy to get the bugs off of Joba? You know the league and the networks would have loved another Yankee/Red Sox playoff series. If bugs would have attacked CC Sabathia instead, people would have blamed Bud Selig.

Sandra

The bugs WERE attacking Indians pitchers and players alike. I was at that game and have rewatched on TV a few times. (And for the record, Fausto Carmona was pitching in that game, not Sabathia). It's just that Carmona didn't make as big of a deal and start crying like Jaba and the pampered "Stinkees".

Could have attacked Sabathia in a different game. If you look at (or quote) my whole post, instead of this one paragraph, the point I'm trying to make regarding conspiracy theories is not taken out of context anymore.

The point was about the validity of conspiracy theories...that the networks would have loved another Yankee/Red Sox ALCS, but no conspiracy theory existed to help the Yankees beat Cleveland.

If you want to find crying in Cleveland, however, look no further than across the street at the "Whatever corporate name they're using at the moment" arena. Nobody is as pampered as, and cries and whines as much as Lebron James. ;)

I agree. Gambling really had nothing to do with it. He had been known to frequent the casinos of NW Indiana from the very beginning of his career. They wouldn't suspend him 9 years later.

Sandra,

I think you've awakened a sleeping giant who may posterize you...

i don't recall casino gambling being the issue as much as the reports that he was playing golf and otherwise associating with gamblers. I am sure that his father's death shook him up. but he spent much of that retirement trying another sport. I can't prove anything and I could be wrong but I always though that this was the NBA's way of quietly suspending him. after all if he was just too upset to play why was he Ok to play the other sport?

But I agre that none of this is provable.

Sorry Jason, I know it's your birthday and all but Dallas just lost that series themselves. They got nobody else to blame but themselves.

You're from the Bay Area?

Anyway, thanks to your stupid Warriors knocking out Dallas, we ended up getting a soulless Spurs sweep and months and months of hearing EVERYBODY slurp Duncan.

IMO, the Spurs owe Golden State big time for last year.

I'm glad Golden State missed the playoffs; they're a bunch of overrated, whiny and bratty hotheads, the NBA's version of Paris Hilton.

Just because the Yankees didn't beat the Indians, doesn't automatically eliminate the possibility for conspiracies. I think there is a lot of pressure on major sports organizations to keep the most popular teams in the mix and into the playoffs. There is also a lot of pressure to get the most favorable matchups that result in the best ratings. Sometimes, the opportunities to help teams out doesn't present itself, but when they do, they make calls that obviously help out the team they want to advance or do well.

Tell that to Cub fans.....

All sports like it when teams that they know will generate high ratings make the playoffs and maybe even the finals. But i question that they go so far as to actually rig a game or a series. I do think that they allow NY.LA etc certain natural advantages and these cities tend to have winning teams because of that.

As for the Cubs well sometimes no amount of help is enough. I am a red Sox fan so I can sympathize with Cubs fans. in fact if the Sox and Cubs meet in the series i will root for the Sox but I would actually be happy for Cubs fans if their team won.

I watched that game with great interest (being a Red Sox fan) and I don't remember Joba or the Yankees crying about the bugs??? I remember classy Joe Torre saying both teams had to play in those conditions. The Yankees are pampered??? Really? Don't think so....they're the most successful team in the history of sports (again coming from a RED SOX fan). Instead of putting other teams down all the time, why don't you take a good long look at your teams? Oh, I know, they're always the victims. Just ask LeBron. I saw you called Paul Pierce a "wuss" in the NBA thread. What a joke. Apparently you didn't hear Chris Sheridan's (of ESPN.com) version when he saw Pierce at two this morning, he said Pierce could hardly walk. I'll take that "wuss" on my team any day. I'm just tired of seeing the my team is better than your team, or our players are better than your players posts. That's what I like about Sabres, Sandra, Ramy, and a few others posts on here. It's not always about their team(s).

I think he's still bitter about LeBron coming up short in that Game 7 duel.

Wow, great post. Torre was actually criticized in the NY papers for not doing anything to help Joba, and at least try to delay the game.

HD and a couple of others on here do seem to have an anti-East coast bias in them. Must be a midwestern thing. Perhaps they don't like the fact that our teams (and fans) care more about each other, never about them...even when they're good.

I'm so sorry I fell asleep last night and didn't see the game. How amazing is what Paul Pierce did? I heard about it on Mike and Mike this morning, sounded incredible.

Yeah, and LeBron is a great player. In fact, he's better than any player on the Celtics. Wow, did I just compliment LeBron? I don't even live in Ohio! What a concept!!!

Easy! The last person who made those comments ended up buying all interested parties in NE Ohio a free large one topping pizza from Papa John's!

The Yankees and Joba were the ones who stopped the game in the middle of play. They then had a "meeting" with the umpires and managers to discuss a solution. They then had bug spray brought out and sprayed everyone down. In my estimation, it was a bit overkill. Just play the game!

And as for my bias, I am a homer and damn proud of it. I also tend to be one of the few Cleveland fans on this sports board, so I feel that Cleveland's viewpoint be heard.

By calling Pierce a "wuss", it was all in good nature. It was more of a comment based on his dramatic performance, err injury/recovery in the 3rd quarter.

BTW, does your post qualify for the Sport's Meltdown Thread started by Sabres the other day?
