Nashville, TN
Please forgive the noobish nature of my post.

I'm in Nashville, TN and I want to watch the Canadian locals here. From what I've read, Star Choice is cheaper and more reliable signal here, so that sounds good to me.

Can someone walk me through how to get the equipment, how to find an installer and how to get it activated?

not necessarily. I live in MN and don't go through a broker.

The correct term would be "you need a Canadian address to subscribe to Starchoice"

It use to be very easy having dual residences in both countries as they have a Home Away from Home package. This changed April 1'st, see this thread:

This package is Grandfathered for existing customers prior to April 1st, 2009. For a new customer you can still have a second residence outside of Canada but you must have a seperate subscription for each residence.

The HD signal is much more stable for Star Choice (now named Shaw Direct) than Bell TV, as Nashville TN is the beginning of the fringe for Bell TV's 82W (HD channel) satellite location. My second residence is in Northern Alabama and Shaw Direct works just fine with the larger 75-E dish.

If you do not have a Canadian residence a broker is another option. Shaw Direct did not have anyone they would recommend for the install in Alabama and asked if I could do it myself which I did.

From what I've read, having an address in Canada isn't that difficult. I don't think they even verify that address as long as you sign up for auto-billing. But for $25/year a broker may be a better option.

Shaw Direct insisted on doing the install a my Canadian residence. If you can get out of that it would be the best way to go. I will never use a broker again after the mess with Can-Am!

I think I read somewhere that you don't have to have service at a Canadian address. I believe a Canadian working down here in the US with a home address said he was able to get service here without having it at his Canadian home.

I am currently in Nashville and have used Bell TV since 99. With Nimiq 4 I found I had to go to a 76 cm dish for 82W. I would suggest you go with Starchoice as the signal is a lot stronger. With all the rain we have had here in Nashville over the last few days, I lost signal on 82 several times.

PM me if you need more info.
