From what I have read Tablo is supposed to pass 5.1 surround sound. But no matter what settings I do on the Tablo, Sony TV and soundbar I cannot get surround sound to work. I have the TV set to pass-through.

Any idea on how to get this working? I have a brand new soundbar and I would love to get 5.1 surround sound out of it using Tablo. I tried every channel that I have on Tablo.

Not all OTA Broadcast TV stations pass 5.1, just Dolby Digital, which could be mono (1.0), Stereo (2.0), surround (4.0) and 5.1.

For example, if you are watching a older rerun (I dream of jeannie for example), it will only be in mono.

I recorded the same FBI show using my H3 and using Tablo both from the same OTA station. The H3 shows dolby surround, but the Tablo does not.

From my research, Tablo eventually ends up being a horror show. I'm never going near one, if I ever cut the cord.

I use the NEXT Gen Tablo with 4 tuners. It has a setting in the menu that has recently changed. It used to say Pass through Surround Sound and it now says Audio Compatibility Mode. IF you switch it on it says:

Switches all Audio format for all live TV and new recordings. Enable if you are experiencing issues with Playback. So if you enable it it says ON (Stereo AAC.)

So if you switch it to off, it says (Surround Sound AC3)

Above the two choices it says Surround Sound is supported by most, but not all playback devices. If you don't hear sound OR are having Play back issues with over the air content, try enabling Audio Compatibility Mode by switching to Stereo ( AAC) IF not, this setting can be left on Surround Sound (AC3).

So I left it off and I'm not hearing any problems with sound. So I take it if the ota is in surround sound I am getting it that way.

i don't like that they sell your data..
Very hypocritical, considering you have Dish Network and they do the same-

    • Identifiers and Activity: DISH acknowledges in its DISH Network Privacy Notice that it sells or shares personal identifiers, imprecise geolocation, inferences, and commercial or network activity.
    • Mailing Lists: They may share customer names and mailing addresses with mailing list partners.
    • Aggregated Data: They share de-identified or aggregated viewing data and metrics with programmers and advertisers.
