Tennis officials are considering a ban on emitting too much noise.

As it stands players can have a point awarded against them if the umpire feels they have hindered an opponent.

However new proposals to make noise hindrance part of the International Tennis Federation's code of conduct, could mean grunters could potentially forfeit a whole game or match.

One of the loudest offenders is Maria Sharapova, who at 101 decibels is almost as loud as a lion's 110 decibel roar. Monica Seles is not far behind with her groans reaching 93.2 decibels.

I hate the players who grunt in tennis. It's not necassary at all.

I've actually read somewhere that certain tennis coaches actually teach their students to grunt. It's considered a mental tactic to emit fear in the opponent. It's also a way to get more adrenaline pumping during a serve or return.

Yes,Monica Seles comes to mind.I saw her at the US open many years back. She was a loud one.People outside the stadium must have thought the inqiustion was going on inside !!!
It sounded like she was beong tortured on the rack <lol>

There's no doubt that it's being encouraged by certain coaches, but I don't think it helps. Lots of tennis coaches tell players to do foolish things. Look at the way a lot of the women serve. Players like Sharapova have these crazy service motions that are totally mechanical, but the men just step up to the line and serve the ball. Same thing with grunting. There's no logical reason for a player to grunt when they hit the ball, yet coaches tell impressionable young players that it helps. BS. Does Federer grunt on the court? Does Tiger Woods grunt when he hits a tee shot? No!

The only possible advantage to grunting when hitting the ball is it makes you breathe when you hit the ball rather than hold your breath. In boxing breathing out when throwing a punch is taught to make the boxer breathe.

On the other hand, grunting when hitting a tennis ball is, to me, the most unsportsmanlike thing anyone can do! It is distracting for no other reason than it is distracting. That is the definition of unsportsmanlike behavior.

Here's an idea, if it bothers the opponent so much, then have them wear ear plugs.
What a great idea, this way we can let the fans just bring all their noise-makers and make all the noise they want during play! Hey, why not allow the players to use mirrors on their headgear to reflect light into their opponents eyes during the volley! The Opposing player can always wear sunglasses!

This pretty much started with Monica Seles. didn't it? Now they all do it. Copy cats. It's like watching pitchers in the MLB. Every conference, they all talk through their mitts, like somebody is lip reading. Then the manager comes out and talks in front of everybody. Cracks me up every time. One guy started this stupidity, now everybody does it. Same thing with the grunting. The first time I heard it, I thought maybe I had turned on the porno station instead of the US Open.
