The HD-lite war is over

What we have now would have been considered a miracle six or seven years ago..some new technology will come along and we'll all have a bunch of abandoned dishes and OTA antennas on our roofs...Think how much fun we'll have arguing about the new tech.

What about HD programming on C-band? I have a 4dtv receiver and a 10' dish still connected but I don't subscribe to any programming. Is the quality of the limited HD programming on C-band better than DBS?

Yes.

Yup those are the quotes I was remembering.. Just too lazy to go looking for the links ;) I wish I could have been a fly on the wall in Mark's house when he did an A/B comparison of his channels on D* vs. E* back in January! Thats when I switched from D* to E* and the difference was HUGE.

HD Lite

I think the picture on the HD channels is far superior to anything else out there. I am sick and tired of this HD lite BS. In stead of voicing your negative opinion, you have a choice, cancel your subscription and quit bothering all of us who are satisfied with the picture and variety we now receive! I had the chance to watch the little league games on comcast cable systems in HD and the picture was sad compaired to Satellite! Maby you need a better tv and a new pair of glasses!

That rich guy ??? Maybe we can talk with Mr. Mark Cuban and see if he's interested in helping out the rest of us with TRUE HD...
Someone has to mandate that the provider delivers the signal at the high quality that it is sent to them in, somehow....
You cannot cut out 1/2 the channels as you would like, because, we are in a huge minority as far as having HD.
I would guess that maybe 5 % of D* and DISH subs are HD subs, so 95 % are still comfortable with the SD channels being brought to them (posibbly 10%).
Ala carte was mentioned a few years back, but I doubt the providers ever seriously considered it. The other trouble with that would be that ala carte channels would cost more per channel and eventually come to about what your paying now. IMO.

I use to order ala carte and liked it very well with my old C - Band, but I think packaging gives the best overall value, the provider can bundle a few channels you don't want, provided you get enough channels you do want.

Jimbo

yes, i see what u are saying on the value part, BUT i get NO value out of lifetime network, soap, ect. if there was a way, i would gladly pay the same amount now for 1/2 the channels and great hd!but- whats the saying about if??lol

And might I suggest that you shouldnt bother to come into, let alone read and post in HD-Lite threads! Nothing wrong with my TV or my eyes. Is HD Lite better than SD? Sure. Do we all have to be pleased with mediocrity like you? Thank God, the answer is no. The biggest problem is there is no alternative, and Dish knows it.

Man I could have swore they were 1440 x 1080.

I got an idea, how about they lower the bitrate on Animania and raise up the resolution on another channel or two. :)

Animania would look just fine in 480p

damn, voom was ahead of its time. i only had it for about 6 months, but it was great!!
Yes, Voom was great. But, if it started up today it would still be "ahead of its time".

Never underestimate the public's acceptance of volume over mediocrity! There just aren't enough of us willing to pay a premium for true HD...:(

Hey, wait a minute!! Don't touch my HD Pink Panther and The Inspector! :D

Do You want people here to think your IQ matches your post count (which was 55 when I posted this)? WTH do you get off going out of your way to come into this "HD Lite" thread and then post your dissatisfaction about "HEARING" about HD Lite and that we should "quit bothering you".

Man, I'm glad school starts back up soon.

The problem is with what drives not only the average consumer, but us as well - and that is content.

The other night I had a choice between an HD baseball game and watching a streamed Internet, highly compressed and pixelated baseball game stretched to a 57" HD box. I watched the pixelated stretched game because the content was what I wanted. Same thing with college football when I choose a pay per view game over CBS HD - I want the content.

As long as content is the driver, the providers will provide that. I've had HD since the days of the Dish 6000 with add on OTA and 8PSK - I've seen the degradation in quality both in Sat and OTA with subchanneling.

The fact for me is A) HD-Lite is still better than SD. B) Content is still more critical than quality. C) I am willing to accept HD-Lite broadcast and utilize HD-DVD or other for full quality HD.

In a perfect, bandwidth free world I would expect full resolution for all my HD products - but the reality is I want content over perfect quality. I know that is wrong to many purists and it makes me part of the problem...

And that's fine - you have every right to that opinion. At least you're not jumping in here telling those that are of the opposite opinion to stop complaining.

Dish also has the right to weigh these opinions and market their product accordingly - whether it's HD-Lite or MPEG2 disguised as MPEG4.

What they don't have the right to do (in my opinion) though is piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining and that's what it amounts with the way Dish presents their HD programming.

If they want to cut the PQ of their HD channels (whether it's rez, bitrate or whatever), then don't present it as HD anymore. Call it Enhanced Plus or something.

If real HD is what can be seen on HD DVDs, then neither "D" nor "E" have any right to call what they are selling HD - period.

I heartily agree that content is a major driver... if my favorite song is being played on a scratchy AM radio station I will listen because it's the song, not the quality... of course, I would enjoy it even more on my home audio system when I get not only content but quality. What we all are seeking in a perfect HD world.

I am getting tired though (not hitting on you BudShark, your post just reminded me) of all the comments that use "HD-Lite is still better than SD" as an argument. That is not the issue or the comparison. That's like comparing DVD to VHS (forgetting all the things that can degrade a DVD transfer for the moment). The comparison is HD-Lite to full HD. I dare say all members of this forum would jump for joy if all SD channels magically had the bandwidth to become HD-Lite.

The other major driver has been cost. Only now is the cost of HD gear getting down to the more mainstream consumer. There is always hope that the higher the percentage of households that have HD grows, the more content suppliers will be ready to provide.

I am with you on that one Bud. D* sub here and I am even pissed off about E* going on a diet. That said, content counts.
On Sunday, i have to say I would rather watch my beloved Philadelphia Eagles playing in HD-Lite than look at a fantastic piece of cheescake on the Food network in the best HD available.

They are?

Aren't they? I read somewhere on this or other boards that the Voom channels were the truest form of hd lite there is at 1280 x 1080. If that isn't true Scott can you tell me exactly what they are at ?

Whatever happened to the 611 single-tuner dvr?

Did I get this setup right?
