What we have now would have been considered a miracle six or seven years ago..some new technology will come along and we'll all have a bunch of abandoned dishes and OTA antennas on our roofs...Think how much fun we'll have arguing about the new tech.

HD Lite
I think the picture on the HD channels is far superior to anything else out there. I am sick and tired of this HD lite BS. In stead of voicing your negative opinion, you have a choice, cancel your subscription and quit bothering all of us who are satisfied with the picture and variety we now receive! I had the chance to watch the little league games on comcast cable systems in HD and the picture was sad compaired to Satellite! Maby you need a better tv and a new pair of glasses!

Unless they changed in the last 3 days, they are 1280x1080i. Although some of them run high enough bitrates to justify 1920x1080i (Rave for one).
Man I could have swore they were 1440 x 1080.
I got an idea, how about they lower the bitrate on Animania and raise up the resolution on another channel or two.
Animania would look just fine in 480p

The problem is with what drives not only the average consumer, but us as well - and that is content.
The other night I had a choice between an HD baseball game and watching a streamed Internet, highly compressed and pixelated baseball game stretched to a 57" HD box. I watched the pixelated stretched game because the content was what I wanted. Same thing with college football when I choose a pay per view game over CBS HD - I want the content.
As long as content is the driver, the providers will provide that. I've had HD since the days of the Dish 6000 with add on OTA and 8PSK - I've seen the degradation in quality both in Sat and OTA with subchanneling.
The fact for me is A) HD-Lite is still better than SD. B) Content is still more critical than quality. C) I am willing to accept HD-Lite broadcast and utilize HD-DVD or other for full quality HD.
In a perfect, bandwidth free world I would expect full resolution for all my HD products - but the reality is I want content over perfect quality. I know that is wrong to many purists and it makes me part of the problem...

Dish also has the right to weigh these opinions and market their product accordingly - whether it's HD-Lite or MPEG2 disguised as MPEG4.
What they don't have the right to do (in my opinion) though is piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining and that's what it amounts with the way Dish presents their HD programming.
If they want to cut the PQ of their HD channels (whether it's rez, bitrate or whatever), then don't present it as HD anymore. Call it Enhanced Plus or something.
If real HD is what can be seen on HD DVDs, then neither "D" nor "E" have any right to call what they are selling HD - period.

I am getting tired though (not hitting on you BudShark, your post just reminded me) of all the comments that use "HD-Lite is still better than SD" as an argument. That is not the issue or the comparison. That's like comparing DVD to VHS (forgetting all the things that can degrade a DVD transfer for the moment). The comparison is HD-Lite to full HD. I dare say all members of this forum would jump for joy if all SD channels magically had the bandwidth to become HD-Lite.
The other major driver has been cost. Only now is the cost of HD gear getting down to the more mainstream consumer. There is always hope that the higher the percentage of households that have HD grows, the more content suppliers will be ready to provide.
