I'm thinking of switching to DirecTV and wanted to know what equipment I should be asking for.

I'm wanting wired satellite due to that fact that I live in the sticks and there is no reliable, decent speed internet for streaming available.

What would be the correct equipment for three 4K tvs in the house?

HS17 and three clients. I have no experience with the new Gemini boxes but I'm happy with the wired C61K. Unlike you, I have excellent internet so I use the app on five TVs along with the one box.

An HS17 Genie server (which does not connect to a TV) and 3 C61K clients although you can only watch 2 4K streams at a time which probably isn't an issue since DIRECTV doesn't have a lot 4K content.

Just an FYI but Starlink could be an internet option for you if you really wanted to be able to stream.

OK, this is weird, DirecTV rep just told me that the HS17 is wireless and is for homes with a steady internet. And told me that I would need the HR54 since I have no internet.

Something tells me that I just spoke to the rookie. :facepalm

That is 100% wrong. Call back and talk to another one. Both the HS17 and the HR54 can connect to the internet and supply internet to other receivers. But neither has to. Also the HS17 does have a wireless video bridge built in that the HR54 does not but it is used to send DIRECTV programming to wireless clients which you specified you do not want. With wired clients the HS17 can still send the programming via coax to them.

Thank you!
That's the reason that I posted this question here before even talking with DirecTV.

I've been around this barn a couple of times. Just wanted to make sure that nothing has really changed since my last DirecTV account.

I'm having trouble with the posit that StarLink is not available. You do not appear to be in an oversubscribed area

Why do you think you can't get StarLink?

I never said that Starlink is not available. The Starlink app shows obstructions for every category, so I have not researched it further.

If they are requiring all clients on a new HS17 install to be wireless, that is not a technical requirement. It saves their techs from having to pull coax all over the house. It makes installations cheaper.

Which was more than likely the idea when they 1st went to that set up.

Most if not all StarLink installations have obstructions. Still have service. I am 7% obstructed and rarely lose signal. Just a very few seconds every few days.

That is false about the HS17. They may not want to set it up wired but if you already have coax and the splitters it is easy to do yourself.

Thanks guys! That's the reason I started this thread.

So... Just to be clear, the HS17 is the correct way to go? And yeah, the coax is already run.

As long as you specify you want to have the 4K C61K's and the HS17 without any substitutions the installer will have no choice but to use the coax as the 4K C61K's doesn't do wireless.

false the system won't even allow them to do hardwired gemini's or the mini's even if there's already coax installed. the hr--54 is the non internet version and the hs--17 is the internet version. according to them!! there idiots. i tried 5 times :biggrin

That is simply not true. The HR54 can access the internet just like the HS17 can. So if he orders the HS17 and 3 C61K's explain to me like I am 5 years old how they are going to install those C61K's wireless.

To vlad_ if they say they can't do the install you want as I described email the Office of the President at their email address: directv_oop_customer_care@directv.com and tell them what you want and see what they say. You can't trust anything a DIRECTV CSR tells you.

Agree!!!! both the hr-54 and the hs-17 can live with or without the internet!!! they won't even do a hardwired install using the hs-17 and mini's if the rg 6 is already laid down. who ever came up with this new system is a complete f**king idiot!!!

As I said before, "You can't trust anything a DIRECTV CSR tells you". I still don't think that is a new policy. They might as well just close the satellite business down if that is a new policy.
