Time to Upgrade?

We are moving in June of this year and I know at that time I can do DISH mover and upgrade to the Hopper 3 from my current Hopper 2.

Would there be any advantage of going ahead and upgrading the equipment now, before the move? I'm thinking I could transfer my recordings and not have to do that for a new install in the midst of a move.

It looks like I will also need to upgrade Joeys for the H3? Is that just a matter of unhooking the old ones and hooking up the new ones?

You could do it now, it shouldn't make a difference. If you have Joey 1s they would replace these with Joey 2s. It's a simple trade. If they are already Joey 2s, all is good.

I presume you plan to transfer to EHD and not direct wire.

Bear in mind that they will require an installer to come do the upgrade even though you already have a Hopper. At a minimum, you will also likely need the LNB on your dish swapped out in addition to the new H3 and Joey2s. Only bringing this up as your post suggests you might be considering swapping things yourself.

And the Hopper 3 is new enough that there is not likely to be a new iteration before June?

I think we'd all be shocked if there was a newer Hopper in that timeframe.

THAT replacement ain't happening anytime soon. Maybe not even next year.

I was having problems with my Hopper 2 and Dish sent out a technician and swapped out my Hopper for the new Hopper 3 at no charge. He did swap out the LNB as well as the node while he was here.

We moved last October and ordered the H3 once we were in new house to coincide with the Dish Mover. Hindsight 20/20 I would have done it at old place and started burning off the 24 month commitmen a few months t sooner.
