You may want to check Toshiba.com. The more expensive is not a recorder.

They have similar (perhaps identical) electronics inside, from what I was told.
The main advantages of HD-XA1 are as follows:

1. Motion-activated remote
2. Heavier, more solid chassis
3. RS-232 interface for rack-mount installations
4. Motorized front door.

That's all that comes to mind. I will add to the list if I remember something else.
