Transfering from old DVR?

Has anyone tried removing the drive from a 501, 508, 510, 522, 622, putting it in an external USB drive enclosure and hooking it to the USB port? Does it automatically format or would already be formated properly?
Could you then transfer your old recordings? Even if you need to send the old DVR back to dish, you could replace the drive before returning.

The ViP622/722 will ask you to approve reformatting it. No reformat, no work.

Your best bet is to burn a DVD from the 5xx.

You can transfer content from your 622 to an external Hard Drive, but you can't from any of the other mentioned Dish DVR's.

You can then transfer that stored content to another Vip 622/722 but again can NOT transfer content to any other Dish DVR's from an External Hard Drive.
