Tricks to get smart card reader to work temporarily?

I was searching for help with a smartcard error (trying to see if I could recover the programs saved on the DVR) and I saw a message that included some tips to get a balky smartcard reader to work, at least for a short time, but now I cannot find the post.

I think one was something about using a pencil eraser on the smartcard (??) and something about slipping a gift card in on top of the smart card (??). If anyone has any suggestions that I could try, I would be VERY grateful! I am trying to get the dang thing to work long enough for me to move some programs onto a Pocketdish..

Yes on the metal contacts clean them with a pencil eraser. That normally does the trick.

Rubbing alcohol on a q-tip is the only other suggestion if that don't work the card reader in the receiver is broken.

place a business card placed on top of the smart card and slide both in together.
