The time had come to cancel Dish. My annual discounts came to an end so my bill shot up to $144. That along with all the problems and issues that the CUI has caused (Hopper1, Hopper2, Joey 1) was finally enough. I had decided to go with Playstation Vue with the Ultra package. This would give me all the channels I need including HBO and Showtime, as well as cloud DVR for $80 a month.

So yesterday I called and got retentions on the phone. Catherine knew right away that my last discount had expired and asked if that was why I was calling. I told her yes and that the carbon update had made my equipment slow, unreliable and prone to lockups. I also told her that I was aware I was eligible for a free Hopper 3 upgrade, but that I was not interested in a 2 year commitment.

I called fully expecting to cancel, but now they are coming on the 10th to install a Hopper 3 and Joey (I am dropping one box and will go FireTV) for me to try with no commitment. She also gave me my discount for one month, If I like the equipment then I can call back and make my discount permanent for 12 months, if not i can call and cancel.

They just won't let me leave :)

When I canceled, it took me 1/2 hour to get them off the phone. By the time the agent gave up, I had about 5 different better and better offers. They were too late though, and none of the offers got rid of the extra fees that ruined everything.

You can't just call and cancel once you sign the 2-year contract that the installer gives you.

I guess she is telling you not to sign the contract if you aren't satisfied with the equipment, but that will get you an angry installer at your house.

I'll put money on the bet that you will indeed be on a commitment. Dish does not do upgrades without it. Another CSR telling you what you want to hear, I wager.

I’m $ure he can call and ea$ily cancel. It’ll be $imple......

I will be sure to fill you in when the installer comes. I will have no issue not signing and not having the equipment installed. In fact when the installer calls I will let them know that if there is a commitment involved they can save themselves the trip. :)

You might as well just call Dish customer service and they will tell you. The best thing about Dish is their modern equipment, I wouldn't worry about that part.

Just ask him to show you the agreement. It should say no commitment in the type of agreement it is. If it's a DHA or DIU, it's a 2 year commitment

DISH does do upgrades without committment

I think that is true. But I had trouble with my Dish Mover promotion. I had self-installed a 2-arc system at my old house to get internationals off 61.5. When I moved into this house in 2004, I did the Dish Mover and they only wanted to give me one dish, because I was not paying for internationals at that time. I had to make a commitment to turn them back on again before they would give me that 2nd dish. Otherwise, it was $100. I went with the commitment.

Right now, I'd settle for a free repoint...
I got one of those a few years back. I added the new Hopper 3 and the hybrid lnb. I couldn't seem to get some of the transponders on 72.7 to come in strong using the same alignment and point for my regular dishpro plus triple lnb sitting on the pole next to the hybrid. I called DISH and asked them if I could get one since I wasn't confidant that the hybrid was strong as my other lnb. He said sure and since I was such a long term customer , they would do it for FREE! I said thanks and when the guy came out he used the super buddy and peaked my hybrid and said it was locked now and then he helped me re-install my regular dishpro plus lnb and peaked it too. Funny thing, the same four transponders came in lower than the regular dish pro plus lnb , but I don't lose my signal so what ever. I was just floored that DISH gave me something like that for FREE.:clapping

You pays the fees, you get the frees! :D

Those instances (if any) are few and far between. I could see the possibility for LONG term subs, but rar

I will always remember, during the AMC dispute about 7 years ago, they sent me my First Roku...free. All you had to do was call and ask. Also, I don't have the protection plan but I've NEVER paid for trouble service call. They treat us"seniors" very well!

Spectrum called me today, trying to get me to drop Dish. I have their internet & phone. No DSL out here. But those CSR's sure try to talk a person into anything. My contract with Dish runs out later this year with my discounts. I will see what they will offer me then. I own my equipment, only one vip211k, and it works well. I have AT250, Movie pack, HBO, & the add on News Pack to get BBC World. I used to watch BBC World off the internet, without the number of ads like on Dish. I may have gotten a raw UK feed at the time, but the Dish version has way too many ads, so I will drop the news pack & HBO after the contracts run out. They gave me HBO for $10 a month, but I only watch a couple shows on HBO, hardly worth the $10 a month.

Glad they where able to save you. Goes to show how far Dish is willing to go to stop from bleeding subscribers.

They would have never done this 5 years ago.

I remember customers bouncing between Dish and Direct in the mid 00's and Dish's response was always don't let the door hit you on the way out. Funny how things have changed.
