I am presently using a 722k receiver, even though I seem to remember the same situation with the VIP622. Let me set the scenario, then ask the question.
I have a program set up to record from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM and the guide shows that this is recording on tuner 2.
I have another program set to record from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM, showing on tuner 1. Standard overruns on both.
If I am watching program 1 while it records, at 5:57 PM the receiver will switch me to program 2. Program 1 continues to record and I can jump back to it.

Does anyone know why the receiver doesn't just let me continue to watch the program on tuner two? Just curious.

There is a start early/end late times on the receiver timers that cause both tuners on the receiver to be in use for the 3-4 minutes. This is the default setting and this can be changed

Assuming you are at TV1, are you watching Program 1 by going into the DVR menu and selecting the event to watch? That would keep the TV from switching when Program 2 fires.
