2 questions, first, is there a way using the TW SA8300 to determine the amount of used or available storage? second, can an external HD be installed. Using TW in Columbus, Ohio

I think you can go to "scheduled recordings" and it should show you the amount of space used in %. I have not hooked up an external HD but I think it can be connected to free up some space. Do a search for SATA.

Don't think sata is enabled in Columbus yet for Time Warner
