Hi all,
can someone explain if i can do this. I'm trying to get Dish at my weekend home, without buying an extra subscription.

have Dish 500 with an 811 receiver and a 311 receiver in the bedroom. the 311 receiver has one of the yellow smart cards.

thinking about buying a used Dish 500 and maybe a 311 box to take to a weekend vacation house. If i do this, and set it up myself, can i just take the smart card out of my bedrrom 311 receiver, and place it in the reciever at the weekend house, and everything work?

and, if anyone could enlighten me, why some boxes use the smart cards and why some dont'...

thanks!!!

well.. you "not technically" take the whole receiver to the house and plug it in and it would work... but its not allowed by dish (even tho Charley does it himself)... you CAN NOT take the smart card out and put it in the other the cards are "married" to each receiver and there for not interchangeable... hope this helped

You were ok til you got to the card switch..Not necessary..Buy the dish and receiver and add the reciver to your existing account. You'll incur a $4.99 per month additional outlet fee....
Install the dish at the weekender and connect the reciver..Done..Easy simple voila..

oh i skipped this part my bad... some use cards and others seem to not have them. but really they both have them... for example the 301 has a card that you put in the card slot. the 311 on the other hand has the card preinstalled onto the motherboard. thats about it.

We have a weekend house also. We are only there 5-6 times a year. We had dish up there, but we canceled it because it was just too expensive for the amount of time we were there. We still have our receiver connected and we know it works because we still get the religious channels and the option for PPV. Are you saying we could bring that receiver home, call and add it to our home account, then take it back up to our weekend home and it would work??

The 311 doesnt have a smart card. Do you mean a 301?

When I first joined Dish, I was allowed to take a receiver to my camping trailer for weekends/vacations. We carried back and forth a 301. I have a tripod and dish 500. All was well. Over the years, we just stopped taking so many trips or taking a receiver with us. I no longer have the original 301, but if I were to do this again, I would take our 508. I guess the rules no longer allow for doing this, but it was a major reason we went with them in the first place. For brief trips, I doubt there would be a problem. In any event, they are mostly concerned about people "sharing" accounts. Too much harassment over someone doing what I used to do would just anger their customers and result in MORE, not less, theft.

I know they use to have some sort of offer (two accounts and some additional fees, but not as expensive as two totally seperate accounts) to allow access from both a home and vacation home. I could not find it at their site. Anyone have the details and preferriably the pointer to a page at Dish's Site?

Search for audit team and DISH nazis, then decide if it is worth the savings.
Just make sure to bring the receiver "home" each time. When Dish asks about the traveling receiver, tell them it's unhooked at the moment. I know you're not allowed to call them back after hooking it up (or running to your relative's house to where the receiver is), but can't you tell them to call back in 5-10 minutes to give you time to find it and hook it up ??

No, your guilty until your proven innocent with the audit police. You WILL and I repeate WILL be accused of being a criminal and will have your receivers shut off and they will be flagged for regular audits without phone connections once you fail an audit. Heck I gave them correct information on my receivers on the location ID and they still told me that I failed the audit and they said they locked my account but what is odd is that they never shut any of them off. Seemed to me like the guy didn't know what he was doing. I called back and demanded to have my account unlocked and they finally done so after calling back enough times.

Sure you can call back once you have ALL receivers that are on the account there and ready hooked up to a satellite dish to give them the information but they will probably put you on a hit list to call you all the time from that point on.

My point is, in 5-10 minutes, they can't think you ran to your brother's house, pulled the receiver out, ran home, and hooked it up. Tell them "It's in the basement, which we're remodeling, so it's unhooked at the moment". Worse, make them wait on the phone while you hook it up after taking it out of the closet or wherever you store it.

DO NOT leave it at the vacation house.

If you think your account is flagged for numerous audit checks, so what ?? If the receiver is at the vacation house, odds are you are too. What phone # does Dish have, the regular house or the vacation house ?? If they call your house and you're not home, are you suggesting they'll shut off receivers ?? I don't think so...

I asume by "religious programming you meant Sky Angel?...
If that is the programming you got at the weekender, the dish is pointed at the 61.5 sat which is in the Southeastern sky...You have to adjust the dish at to point at 110 and 119 defree orbital slots....Provide your zip and we will tell you where to point the dish

They will shut off the receivers if they attempt to call and you do not call them back (after I week from what others have said in other threads). If they want to combat this problem then they need to make the receivers and the lnbf(s) talk to each other to make sure they are all at the same location.

If they wouldn't charge so much and try to raise the prices so dang much and have all these B.S. fees then maybe they would not have so many people trying to hack or whatever it is they do but that does not make it ok to do it.

I'm curious how long ago that Ergen stated he did this ?? Even if he still does it today, who's pretending that he's bound by the same rules as we are ??
I'm not sure the exact date but I know for a fact he stated it on a chat, it had to be about 4 or 5 years ago I think.
