I am pleasantly surprised to be able to watch nhl hockey on versus even though I don't have versus in my top 200 package. Is this a mistake?

well it's because some of these games will be airing in markets where the local team will blacked out due to local coverage, so you get an alternate feed of another game due to blackouts. it's normal for the ESPN networks, in fact there alternate feeds are on channels 146-148, and local RSNs have alternate feeds in the 400s range, where the Vs. Alternate feed was at.
