IIRC, the HR20-600 was Pace and the HR20-100 was Thompson.
Thats it! thanks for the push, i swear it popped into my head before i got to the end of the sentence. lol

Its the HR-20 "700" though
the 600 is a H-20 model

Acctually DirecTV leases follow the template for all real leases. If you lease something like a car or an appartment you are almost always required to put some money down. You are locked into paying for that service for a set amount of time, almost all leases will NOT allow you to swap out for new, at least not without a huge cost to you, try leasing a car or house and wanting to get out of it early so you can get a better one... You can get a no up front fee lease on some things but it always requires a much larger monthy payment.

Now if you believe we are paying for the service and therefore the equipment to recieve the service should be free... I would like that also, but it probably would result in them not updating the tech nearly as often as they do.

I look at the upfront charge as an 'upgrade' charge. D* charges the same monthly lease fee, be it a SD box, SD DVR, HD box or HR DVR so I pay a bit more up front for a better piece of hardware.

Do you mean HR20-700 or H20-600? The H20-600 is made by LG. I think the HR20-700 is a Pace.

You are correct, too many dang maunfactures to have to keep track to. What happened to D* wanting to get to a common platform

Have you compared the per month costs? That's what did it for me - D* was almost $20/month cheaper, so I made up my upfront costs in no time. Try that avenue with her (if applicable), see what happens...

Correct and look at the past quarters subscriber additons. I think D* know what it's doing.

Imagine the confusion of trying to support different models from several manufacturers.

I understand that and at least they're trying to get to a somewhat common UI. But IMHO it can't help that a box like the H20 has three different manufactures each with different software levels that also have different software options. I don't understand why D* couldn't make it a requirement that the same software has to run on all the manufactures boxes.

Directv doesn't want customers like you. Glad you're happy with the poor mans satellite service (Dish).

This isnt the War-Zone, lets try to keep it civil. The O.P. came in with a gripe which is allowed. We should try to help him, not go off on rants about who D* does or doesnt want for a customer

Affording either service isnt the issue, but it is much more of a matter of principle now. All I wanted was what I had signed up for. That is all I wanted.

They can't require common software because it would leave too little room for differentiation between brands.

There are no more different brands, just D*. What I'm saying is why should there be three different versions of software for the R15 for example? I know three different manufactures are under contract with D* to make these boxes so wouldn't it be easier to tell them all that here's the code and it has to run using this version, not a different version for the -100, -300 and -500?

So here's my dillema. I upgraded to HD in August after being a sub for just a year, and they offered me some deals, one of which was 6 mo's free HD programming. Never have seen that credit. Plus, I have Plus HD DVR and they STILL charge the 5.99 fee DVR fee!

Let's not get started with the Sunday Ticket that a CSR called ME about and sold me on (150 for ST plus SuperFan), which I've not seen ANY credits for! Every time I call I get put on hold while my account is "researched" then disconnected. I'm sick of it. All I want is what was promised to me. I didn't ask for the ST deal, it was offered, as was the $60 credits for HD.

Rad, they could have done this had they thought about it in the beginning and told the different builders that they D* owned the software, I would imagine D* expected improvements with each newer version.
