Okay..I have a ViewSat PVR7000. I have a dual LNB direct tv dish and I hooked that up to the viewsat and it didn't seem to do anything. I've been looking all over for information on how to get this thing set up to work properly. Does anyone have a manual? (i have the users manual but that's not real helpful). Is there a thread somewhere that has setup specifics on these things?

With that dish / LNBF you can only get circular polarity signals. There are no circular polarity / unencrypted channels you can get without paying for a subscription. And if you do pay, you can't use that receiver.

To get free channels, most people will recommend a 31 inch or larger dish (36" preferred) with a linear polarity LNBF.

Man you guys I have no idea what you are talking about lol....The Viewsat I have also came with a DishNetworks dish, I'm not sure about the size, but it came as a package deal. If I use that dish can I get this thing set up?

You can't use that dish

You can't use that dish for FREE TO AIR regardless of how you purchased the equipment. They gave you correct information You can not use that LNB for FTA. Those LNB's are for PAID PROGRAMMING and you can NOT use that Receiver for PAID PROGRAMMING in the USA. If it was purchased as a combo deal someone took advantage of you.

Read for yourself there is tons on info on how to setup your receiver to watch LEGAL FREE Satellite TV.

The first thing you will have to do is get a Linear LNBf and start understanding no one here is going to give you the WRONG information on purpose. It's your choice if you want to learn then listen to what people are telling you otherwise you can sit there and watch a black screen and get nothing...You came here and asked a question and got the correct answer, it's you my friend that has no idea of what you are talking about. This is the best FTA site on the net and most everyone here knows enough to give you the correct infromation or point you in the right directions. Most of those Combo deals such as what you purchased was intended for theft of signals, not saying that was anyones intent or am I accusing anyone of anything illegal. Dishnetwork does not support the use of Viewsat receivers, if you doubt that give them a call and ask them yourself. The dish itself might could be used for some satellites, however the lnbf will have to be replaced and a linear lnb installed. As I said, you can read and listen to the answer you get here or you can sit there and get nothing it's really your choice.

majorpecs - If you use that DishNetwork dish, you will get 1 channel.. The Dishnetwork FYI channel, that's it. Or if you point to the Bell "Nimiq" satellites, you will get 1 or 2 preview channels.. Nothing else.

That DishNetwork dish is basically useless for Free To Air. If you want to make use of your viewsat receiver, you will need a 30 inch minimum (33 to 39 inch preferable) dish with Standard LNB.

I'm not sure why I'm being berated. A buddy of mine was moving, had this sitting in his garage and gave it to me. I know absolutely nothing about it and was just trying to get more information. I'm not trying to steal signals or whatever, I just wanted to be able to set this up in my man cave and watch TV. So basically you are telling me that what i have is useless.

As a "system", yes - kinda useless.
You need either a Bigger Dish and Linear LNB, or a DishNet receiver and Subscription.

You could get something like this......

you are not being "berated", you are being informed, or at least they are TRYING to inform you and you dont seem to want to listen,

the dish you currently have is USELESS FOR FTA, i dont know how anybody can say it any clearer, you need a bigger dish AND different LNB for FTA use,

Hi

I'm not sure why I'm being berated. A buddy of mine was moving, had this sitting in his garage and gave it to me. I know absolutely nothing about it and was just trying to get more information. I'm not trying to steal signals or whatever, I just wanted to be able to set this up in my man cave and watch TV. So basically you are telling me that what i have is useless.

Hi, Not sure why you think you're being berated, we're trying to respond to a your questions. I am not sure what you expect when your reply is "you guys don't know what you're talking about". You are the one asking the Question, that implies you don't understand what you need. Else why even ask? You posted, people took the time to answer and they are giving you the correct answers.

Again here is your answer...

The Dish you have is Not a good dish for Real FTA signals. The lnb if original is not going to work, simple as that, for Real FTA.

Your receiver is a Viewsat and was intended for FTA and can not be used for Dishnetwork.

With the proper dish and lnbf your receiver will work with FTA. You can watch tv in your man cave If you take the time to learn how and what you need.

SatelliteGuys is the best FTA information source on the internet. You can ask and learn how and what you need right here.

To Start you need a dish of the proper size and and lnbf that is linear. If you want to watch tv in your man cave this is what you'll need.

I think you read him wrong, Ironsides, here's what he posted :
Man you guys I have no idea what you are talking about lol..

He just said he had no idea what WE were talking about, not that we didn't know.
Somebody who was using that equipment until it got "cut off" by the encryption upgrade that dish completed gave it to him.

Hey majorpecs you have been told correctly though. For awhile that exact equipment was widely used in piracy of pay-tv signals, now that practice has been shut-down by Dishnetwork. don't know how that reciever does on blind-scanning but with a bigger dish and the correct lnb you could give it a try. Or look around for an old primestar dish, they are still available if you search a little, people will give them away for the removal if you ask. And they are a great dish, the lnbs are stable and in most cases, still good. All you'd need is a pole, and some coax cable! Lots of us use them.

i misread that and I apologize totally

I mis-read that post and I apologize totally, dude I am sorry. Seriously though you will have to get another dish and lnbf for your man cave. Any way I can help you I will be glad to spend some time, one on one through PM's to help. Again I am very sorry for the misunderstanding. I am not making any excuse for myself other than I am blind as a bat but I do apologize.

Keep trying you can get some great tv fta...and have a lot of fun. While it might not seem like it, you can make some really good friends...

Hey, majorpecs, WELCOME to satelliteGuys. A missed , upsets some guys the way a missed . upsets some gals!

When I first read the post, I misread it myself, then read it again and realized what it said. I guess its easy to do that, but we all make mistakes. Welcome to SatelliteGuys!

majorpecs - here is a list of English FTA (FREE-to-air, not dishnetwork or directv) channels you can receive with the correct equipment:

FTAList.com - English channels

When you know a little more about things, you can check out satelliteguys "The List" here for a more detailed and technical listing:

SatelliteGuys.US - TheList

Try driving around town and finding an old Primestar or Hughesnet/Direcway satellite dish that someone is willing to part with. Those dishes work great for FTA and are relatively easy to find with some properly motivated searching.

Have fun!
