[VOOM] Extra Channels in 2005

S

Stan Sexton

Guest

Sounds a little optimistic in relation to VOOM's financial situation,
although I would love to believe it.
Are they really saying that we already have a MPEG 2 and MPEG 4 capable Mot
Box?

[VOOM] Re: Extra Channels in 2005

I think there is an expansion slot for the MPEG 4 module. If you
look at the front right side of the box there is a door there that
opens into an expansion slot. I think once you plug in the MPEG 4
module there the box is now capable of receiving MPEG 4 signals.

RE: [VOOM] Re: Extra Channels in 2005

What does this mean for DVR?

If and when they release their DVR, is it too going to have the expansion
slot for the MPEG4 module or is the DVR an add-on to the existing box we
have now?

RE: [VOOM] Re: Extra Channels in 2005

Well, the original schedule had it with the same plug-ins for MPEG 4, but
the current plan, I would think, has the capability built-in on the chip.
No, the DVR is a completely separate box.
I'm sorry but I don't have any other info to share as to schedule, prices,
etc.
Thanks,
Wilt

Re: [VOOM] Re: Extra Channels in 2005

Wilt,
So now I am not clear on this. Is MPEG 4 built into the chip in the receiver, not requiring the use of an expansion slot?
The DVR will be a seperate box? Can the expansion module be used for a firewire (IEEE 1394) connection? If so, any plans for this in the future? or sooner?
Thanks.

Wilt,
So now I am not clear on this. Is MPEG 4 built into the chip in the
receiver, not requiring the use of an expansion slot?
The DVR will be a seperate box? Can the expansion module be used for a
firewire (IEEE 1394) connection? If so, any plans for this in the future?
or sooner?
Thanks.

RE: [VOOM] Re: Extra Channels in 2005

If you're speaking of the Voom box, yup, by definition.
As to 1394, it's not an incompatibility, its an incapability.
With 1394 the mux is output still compressed and the decompression takes
place at the device; TV, DVR, D-VHS, etc. If these devices, which they don't
currently--and I don't know of a schedule to do so--have on-board MPEG 4
decoding chips/capabilities, then they can't handle the signal.

Re: [VOOM] Re: Extra Channels in 2005

Wilt,
I have an RCA DVR Hard Drive that interfaces via the RCA DLP HDTV 1394 connection. It seems that I can only use it to record ATSC signals from that TV. As expected, I cannot record VOOM even when I select it as the input. So it's a fairly limited DVR for sure. Only networks.
I will need the VOOM DVR to record VOOM programming but will it only handle VOOM and OTA digital received via the VOOM receiver?

Will the VOOM DVR be able to record any other sources?

Does the VOOM box receive NTSC local non-digital signals? I think not but I saw a writeup that says it does.

Has any solution to the OTA only authorization for a purchased but unauthorizable receiver been considered or is it a dead issue?

No more questions today, I promise.

Thanks.

Thanks for such a thorough answer. So MPEG 4 and 1394 are incompatible?
Will your DVR be able to record MPEG 4 then?

Okay, the stuff I can answer:
1. Original boxes have plug in slot,
2. That's expensive,
3. Later boxes, including DVR boxes, will likely all have newer chips that
have Advanced Coding--MPEG 4 and the like, as well as 2--built in,
eliminating the need for a add-in card.
4. The reasons we had to go with hardware versus software decoding, before
someone asks, is that the processing to do full res HD, under software,
didn't look good at the time and still doesn't, in terms of availability.
5. 1394 and Advanced Coding are an issue--the devices that accept 1394
won't accept Advanced Coding.

Wilt,
So now I am not clear on this. Is MPEG 4 built into the chip in the
receiver, not requiring the use of an expansion slot?
The DVR will be a seperate box? Can the expansion module be used for a
firewire (IEEE 1394) connection? If so, any plans for this in the future?
or sooner?
Thanks.

Well, the original schedule had it with the same plug-ins for MPEG 4,
but
the current plan, I would think, has the capability built-in on the
chip.
No, the DVR is a completely separate box.
I'm sorry but I don't have any other info to share as to schedule,
prices,
etc.
Thanks,

What does this mean for DVR?

If and when they release their DVR, is it too going to have the
expansion
slot for the MPEG4 module or is the DVR an add-on to the existing box we
have now?

I think there is an expansion slot for the MPEG 4 module. If you
look at the front right side of the box there is a door there that
opens into an expansion slot. I think once you plug in the MPEG 4
module there the box is now capable of receiving MPEG 4 signals.

[VOOM] Re: Extra Channels in 2005

Wilt, thanks for all the information you have given. By advanced coding for MPEG-4, I
assume you refer to MPEG4 layer 10 aka AVC aka H.264. I am excited about this also ever
since Apple gave a demo of their Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) running H.264. They were able to
display a nice HD movie with just 6mb/sec bitrate instead of about 19mb/sec needed
under MPEG2.

I just have one question though - Will the DVR model contain a firewire port at least for
MPEG 2 programs. I assume you said that firewire port is not useful since there are no
other hardware out there that can do MPEG4 AVC right now.

Thanks again,

-Siva
