[VOOM] NBC Olympic coverage

After having a long coversation with a VOOM CSR and her supervisor and
then with our local NBC affiliate, KING, this is what I've found out.
VOOM (via CSRs) know nothing about Olympics being broadcast on 321,
593& 594 (maybe dragon_lady can help us with this).

KING will be broadcasting a 4 hour opening ceremony in HDTV on their
digital OTA starting at 9 tonight and being repeated every 4 hours
until sometime Sun. morn at which time they will broadcast a 6-8 hour
(they haven't been told whether 6 or 8 yet) repeated segment in HD of
highlights from the Olympic sites that HAVE HD cameras. Of course,
these will be the "popular" sports. On Mon. morn they will start
another repeating segment of new highlights. Their analog signal OTA
and cable will be carrying Olympic coverage daily from 12:30-4 PM and
8 PM (weekdays)/7PM (weekends) to mignight.

It is to bad they have decided not to carry live HD coverage in the
Seattle area. I gather other parts of the country will be able to
receive live coverage in HD on their digital channels. This is not
clear to me.

However, if you call VOOM they can match you up with coverage by
checking your ZIP code as has been previously stated.

Enjoying HDTV under sunny Seattle skies, Gill

The NBC/HDNet joint broadcast of the Winter Olympics was also a 24 hour delay. I would expect them to do this across the board this time as well.

Folks,

I happen to work for NBC in the Burbank broadcast center. NY & Burbank
are the uplink sites for NBC transmissions. Both NY & Burbank have
fiber connections to Athens for the various feeds. Athens, NY,
Burbank, & Miami (origination point for Telemundo broadcasts) are
constantly in communications with one another in a conference call
fashion so that in the event of rain fade issues in NY or failures of
any kind, Burbank is able to take over broadcasts for the entire
network. (This scenario actually happens more than you would think.
The handovers just happen when viewers don't see)

The reason you're seeing the 2002 Olympic coverage is due to the fact
that it's lik 7:00AM in Athens and there aren't any games going on
right now. What you're watching on air tonight in the states was
recorded earlier today in both SD & HD. (I was actually watching both
feeds as they came in) Why they aren't broadcasting the HD version I'm
not sure. Hopefully that will change.

The HD channels being fed to all NBC O&O & affiliate stations will be
a seperate network feed for the next 17 days providing nothing but
Olympic coverage. Normally these transponders carry simulcast HD
content for the SD programs for the network. You all should should
begin to see live HD coverage of the 2004 games from Athens soon.

You should be able to go to http://www.nbcolympics.com/index.html to
see what coverage is being provided on the various networks of NBC
Universal.
