Just doing the research on VOOM. Never had a dish before. Read a lot
of negatives on CNet. Read even more negatives since joining this
group. Are you all pioneers hanging in there until the technology
and the service gets better? Obviously DISH network seems to have
their act together in both realms, albeit without nearly as many HD
shows yet available. Also, since I live in an area where it rains
nine months out of the year, am I just asking for aggravation trying
to get a decent signal. Thanks for any comments/advice.

All satellite providers have good points and some that are not so good. There are a zillion variables in making a decision on which provider to use. For someone who is just getting into satellite TV, I would suggest concentrating on two things. First would be programming, and second would be equipment.

Programming--
Are you interested in HD? Do you have any 'must see' channels? Do you plan to subscribe to premium channels? Look at the channel lineups for all the providers, and do a comparison. Most of all--do not assume that each provider has about the same channels at about the same price, and try to figure out what your budget is for monthly expenses for programming.

Equipment--
Do you plan to buy or rent? How important is the warranty? What about service plans? Purchasing the equipment can be expensive up-front. Renting has less up-front cost, but you get charged every month. Decide on the number of receivers you will need, and the type of receivers, and then see which company comes closest to what you actually want.

Internet forums are a good source of information, but they can also be misleading. The negatives get far more attention than the positives. So try not to base your decision only on what somebody else posts on a forum. My own experience with Voom has been very good. I've had it since January, and had very few problems. All of them were minor, and people on the satelliteguys.us forum helped me solve them.

And about being pioneers? Yes, we are all pioneers with this new company. The latest figures for 'quit rate' for Voom is up around 20%. Many people appear to be hanging on, waiting for the new elliptical dish, DVR, whole-house solution, etc. But if HD programming is one of your main interests, Voom has more than the others at this time.

Good luck with your decision.

[VOOM] Re: New

I am disappointed at both Voom and Dish for not able to release a=20
bug-free product and resolve design issues expediently. Earlier this=20
year, Voom receivers will lock up whenever it receives a not-so-
perfect signal. Later updates eliminated the problem however it took=20
many months to do so. Dish is no better. They introduced the 811 HD=20
receiver with 15 serious problems last December. I gave up after 45=20
days.=20

Voom equipment problems are reported at a much higher frequency than=20
Dish because there is only one Voom configuration while there are=20
many for Dish. The Dish 811 problems were seldom reported because=20
only a tiny percentage of Dish customers have the HD receiver.

Customer service wise, Voom is taking a very long time to mature. I=20
wouldn't get into the details. Hope you are lucky enough to not=20
needing billing or subscription services.

There are two bright spots with Voom that overrides all. Voom cares=20
about their customers. Earlier this year, many customers were given=20
a large cash rebate to reduce the cost of their equipment purchase.=20
Voom is always generous in offering in-home service to resolve=20
problems. Voom's quality and quantity of programming is second to=20
none. If you are interested in the best picture for your HDTV, there=20
really is no other choice. We are stuck with Voom =96 warts and
all.=20

I've had only one instance of Rain fade since I got VOOM in June. I've been
happy.
