[VOOM] VOOM Install Problem(s)

I had a scheduled appt for installation on 3/30/05 between 8-12 am.
Luckily I called on Monday 3/28 to confirm with VOOM. I spoke to a
CSR and was told in was on schedule. I asked for installer name and
was transfered to Install Inc. Installs Inc Gave me the name and
number to call. I called the number and found it to be a
disconnected cell phone. I called VOOM back and was told Install Inc
said they would contact installer and have them call me. Today
3/29/05 I called VOOM again and said no one called me. Voom called
Installs again and told me the contractor quit and there was no one
available to do the install. I was to wait for a phone call for a
appt. I asked when that would be. VOOM replied they did not know. I
asked them if they sent out the equipment to the installer like they
told me , where is it(equipment) now ? VOOM said good question. When
VOOM returned , I was told the equipment never shipped since there
was no installer. I asked them why they allowed me to wait for 10
days for the appt. when they knew there was no one to do the
install. VOOM said they were sorry for the problem and would have
someone call me today or maybe tomorrow. I have not received any
calls. (please note that this is the abbreviated version of events)

[VOOM] VOOM Install Problem(s)

Sorry to hear of your problems. Just to present a different perspective:

Over the new year I had cause to deal with DirecTV for my father in
law. We had an install date set. On the day no-one showed. I called in
to check only to find they had re-scheduled the install date without
telling me! In spite of several assurances they would come out later
the same day, they never did show. Eventually it was late the following
day before anyone showed up. If I had been forced to take two days off
work waiting for this guy I would have been less than happy.

More recently I had my own Voom install done. Before I could even call
to confirm the date/time the installer called me to confirm.
Furthermore the installer was great and did not make a fuss about where
I told him to mount the dish, route the wires etc.

Turns out this installer does installs for DirecTV and Dish as as well
as Voom, although I have heard since he no longer does Voom installs.
I'm sure it is not unusual for installers to work on any of the
systems.

My conclusion is that the quality of the experience depends mostly on
the installer and Voom, or any other provider, has much less influence.
About all they can do is maybe fire the ones who provide lousy service.

INSTALLS INC REFUSE TO GIVE PHONE NUMBER of INSTALLER

In So.Calif. I had waited a week for upgrade equipment to be shipped from Installs Inc. NY because the local installer would not pay for the off the shelf equipment, and then be reimbursed by I.Inc. I called the installs company 35 miles away who did the original, install, but their phone was not answered nor voicemail for 3 days. Voom csr s were helpful as always, but they could not give me a working phone for the installer, and I.Inc. flat refused to despite several calls.
I stayed home yesterday morning just in case, and mid-morning ( 2 hrs. late) a van with two brothers and their uncle arrived. The oldest put up a ladder and went to the dish, the other two came to the receiver location and used phones to communicate with their uncle on the roof. They had to see if the existing dish could be better adjusted, but they spent 45 mins. and couldn't get signal above 80 on a beautiful day. Then they got the larger dish from their van and substituted it. WOW; signals in the 90s immediately !

They also had the RCA cables we never received before, and changed the coax cables back to the combined/splitter format previously removed. They seemed to have no coax cable with them!, and kept cutting pieces from the long run intended to reach the downstairs living room! They told me that VOOM will ship 125 ft. terminated cables to me! They had no business cards, but wrote a phone number on the back of the shipping container! I didn't see what size the replacement dish was, but it does have the VOOM logo on it. At least in dry sunny windless weather, this is the best VOOM I've seen to date.

Questions that baffle me: Having read that the installers are not well paid by Installs Inc. (and confirmed by their lack of coax, and use of plated terminals in lieu of the chrome/stainless ones I've seen) Why would they spend an hour attempting to get better signal from the existing dish rather than just installing the one they were provided with? Why would Installs Inc. repeatedly refuse my point-blank demands for the phone number of their sub-contractor?

For now, alls well that ends well.
I hope you get help from the good installers that regularly post to this thread.
Mike

Re: [VOOM] Re: VOOM Install Problem(s)--Hiya, Wilt, Johnny has a problem for you.

I called VOOM this am and was told they didn't know when I could get my install. I cancelled the install and am going through a retail company and have a appt for a 4/4/05 install. The VOOM CSR agreed and said they (installs, inc. ) wouldn't be able to get my appt that quick. (if at all)
Thank you all for your help. I will let you know how it turns out.
p.s. I just checked my voom acct (MY VOOM) and noticed someone changed my phone number . It was right yesterday !

Re: [VOOM] Becoming disenchanted with SD channels

That's exactly my point. The picture is just upconverted SD but looks
vastly superior to the overcompressed signal on the "regular" ESPN
channel.

BTW my local news is also transmitted as an HD signal, but again it is
just upconverted SD.

I called VOOM and cancelled . I have a company not related to Installs
Inc. coming Monday to do the install.

VOOM still did not know when Installs, Inc could get someone to do the
install .

Re: [VOOM] Becoming disenchanted with SD channels

I can't always tell if it's upconverted SD or HD originally but compression
really shows itself. Sometimes it's so bad you can't see any facial
features. But VOOM is using another satellite for "capacity" or bandwidth
to handle all the new signals and hen compressing to get them to fit. I'm
really not quite sure how it works but the HD is where it's at. Some HD is
very good too and others stink.

Re: [VOOM] Becoming disenchanted with SD channels

I think Voom is passing up a chance at a real marketing opportunity. If
greed wins over bandwidth they will ultimately become just another Dish
or DirecTV, and ultimately the HDs will also suffer as their bandwidth
is squeezed.

Instead Voom could take the PQ "High ground" and continue to attract
the videophiles.
