VOOM receiver signal meters

Do these meters emit a tone with the frequency proportional to signal strength like D* and E* receivers? Or is it like my 4DTV (you need to see the screen to peak the signal)? I've read that the installer peaked the dish using one of the in-line meters but the alignment was not optimal for VOOM. This sounds false considering the wide beamwidth of the 18" dish compared to the narrow beamwidth of my 10 footer.
