Although I'm not a true techie (I am a real estate broker that is a tech
junkie), I agree with your assessment that VOOM should let the "untech
challenged" buy their own receivers, do their own wiring, install their own
dish, etc.
I had the Installs guy come out before the installation and tell me the best
place to install the dish. Then before he came out to do the install, I ran
two RG-6 Quad Shield runs to that location all the way to my new Structured
Wiring Panel and connected it through to the room location for the receiver.
I also ran a separate 10 guage ground wire to the dish location on the roof.
He wanted to install one of the "toy" OTA antennas and I told him I had the
15 foot one on a rotor I would hook up. But it was hard to convince him not
to because of a requirement that OTA be working to activate the VOOM
service.
I really couldn't care less about OTA HD because I don't care for commercial
channels (ones with commercials). If I wanted those, I could get COX HD,
which has mostly OTA HD for an outrageous cost per channel. I also have Cox
telephone, Cox Digital and Analog Cable, and Cox Cable Internet.
But I watch VOOM HD exclusively. My kids watch the SD junk, and my wife
watches mostly SD that you can't get on VOOM.
But going back to this issue for those with minimum tech skills. My VOOM
installer used my ladder and kept asking me for large cable ties to complete
the installation. I could have put the dish up myself. Just needed an
in-line signal strength meter, which are less than 20 bucks.
Now I'm considering a second receiver. But $200+ bucks and having an
installer control the product and delivery? How about a phone call to VOOM,
take a Visa, and UPS it out to me instead? Also, it looks like the dish and
LNB are common to Dish and Direct so no big deal there.
I was going to put up a 38" dish but with a future West Coast bird, maybe an
elliptical dish, I'm just going to wait and see. The whole system may
change, and I feel it's only going to get better with VOOM.
Enjoy the Ride!
