[VOOM] To VOOM: Why no Non-Linear Stretch option?

I got VOOM for the HD content, which is great on 16x9 displays. But
sometimes I have to watch 4x3 material (e.g. CNN) and hate to look at
everybody on screen stretched out like they have been hitting the
pizza bar too often. Why doesn't the VOOM receiver offer the option of
"non-linear stretch" for 4x3 material (where only the sides of the
image are stretched to fill the screen, while the center looks normal)
in addition to the regular "stretch" option? It is such a simple thing
to do and it would greatly improve the viewing experience.

------------------------

If you are watching the 4:3 programming in 1080i (or a resolution your TV won't work on), and your TV has a non-linear stretch mode for lower resolutions (480i/480p), you could change the Voom box to that resolution. Alternatively, you could run a separate S-Video or composite input to another input on your TV (if available) and switch to that input for the 4:3 programs. Although a workaround, it may solve your problem (albeit with more button presses) for the time being.

Cheers,

Doug

[VOOM] Re: To VOOM: Why no Non-Linear Stretch option?

Tx Doug. This is a workarround, but it doesnn't really address the
issue. Non-Linear stretch shouldn't be dificult for VOOM to add as an
option in addition to regular stretch.

Appart from diminishing quality, dropping the resolution to 480 is not
very practical. How many people want to fiddle deep in the menu every
time they change a channel from 16x9 to 4x3 material?

Alsosome TVs just don't have strtch option at all, but rely on the
tuner (the Voom box) to deal with it. While my plasma has non-linear
stretch for 480, my 30" LCD TV doesn't. So I am stuck watching really
obese news casters:-(

Again, I feel this is a major omission on part of Voom, but one that
can be remedied fairly easily with a software update.

Re: [VOOM] Re: To VOOM: Why no Non-Linear Stretch option?

Agreed. Perhaps we'll see it in future relases of the STB. I have a Samsung ATSC receiver as well and it doesn't offer non-linear stretch either, nor does my TV stretch 1080i material. Thankfully my MX-700 makes it a one-button switch if I use the workaround.

Enjoy,

Doug
