[VOOM] Voom DVR

For those of you who can't wait for a VOOM DVR, buy cheap S-VHS VCR and use
the Mot STB's S-Video jack for recording. You'll need two S-cables for the
video and two pairs for the audio and it will only be 330 lines instead of
1080i, but you'll get your shows when not around.
My cable company offers a DVR for Hi-Def but their channel selection is
about 7 HD, and those are mostly OTA. What a joke!
S-VHS Vcrs are super cheap. I paid about $800 for a Panasonic in the early
1990s. I think my JVC was $200 about 3 years ago and it had digital
processing.
JVC has the best selection. I have hundreds of movies on S-VHS. In Japan,
you can buy/rent S-VHS tapes with almost 400 lines. That's almost DVD
quality. Why we got on the crappy 240 line "regular VHS" system is beyond
me.

[VOOM] Re: Voom DVR (try SVHS for now)

I second this. Recently, I programmed my SVHS to record an HD widescreen program from
Voom. The "mode" I had set up for the VCR was 4:3 on the TV. When I played the picture
back it (naturally) looked like it had been horizontally squeezed. So, I changed the mode to
"natural wide" and WOW! what a nice picture for an 10+ year old analog format. In
addition, the new mode setting filled the whole screen as if I was watching a 16:9 DVD.

Of course, the TV has some good upconversion circuitry, and I was recording from Voom
HD signal sources, but I got to tell you- the picture looked really good. I mean surprisingly
good- enough that now I go to the trouble to program a VCR again.

I think Stan is right. For now- get a SVHS VCR and it can still make for a pretty good
recording/playback experience (while we keep waiting for that DVR).

The best of the best S-VHS VCR still only outputs a 480i image. I've had my
Mitsubishis for almost 10 years now and spent a fortune on them. They
collect dust. I would not consider that even remotely a replacement for a
HD DVR.
