[VOOM] Why do we need duplicate channels wasting bandwidth?

Original poster
I have a curious question. Unlike DirecTV and Dish Network, all Voom boxes are HD right.
Then why does Voom have both HD and SD channels for HBO, HBOW, ESPN, TNT, Cinemax,
Starz, Encore, etc. To me, the HD signal is enough. The Voom box can decode that and
give it in one of the four supported resolutions (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i) to the TV. The
channels I mentioned above have the same program simulcast in HD and SD. I can
understand if the HD feed is different from SD (like the Discovery channel).

Anyone have any explanations? Wilt?

Contracts or not, it is very silly and a complete waste of bandwidth. Lets hope the SD simulcasts are just temporary until the space is needed for other channels or they get moved to AMC-6 when it becomes active.

They will still occupy bandwidth no matter where you move them. Voom must carry them per their contracts with HBO, SHO, etc just as D* and E* must carry SD feeds. Your problem is with the suppliers not Voom, take it up with them.

Because some of us have both sd AND hd tv sets. .. ie two receivers. My
living room set is HD whereas my daughters tv is SD. If they took away all
the SD channels, she wouldn't be able to watch tv. And I'm not going to pay
$100 a month AND pay for cable or whatever for her room.

Robert

You missed the point Robert ;). The HD channels can still be put out at 480i over Svideo, composite, etc; All he's saying is that there's no need for both. He's right. The problem, as others have pointed out, is contracts.

That is incorrect... You can have the STB hooked up to the SD tv and the HD
channels work fine. She would get every channel still in great quality.

I don't have voom nor an HDTV but have Comcast HD and a SD tv... I like it
because everything is super clear and widescreen.

So you wouldn't need the cable and voom...Just Voom

When she puts on an HD channel (ie 100-201) all she gets is a black screen
with audio. She only gets video on SD channels. I'm using std
yellow/red/white cables between the VOOM receiver and her tv.

How is the box set to output? Make sure it is set for 480 and not
anything higher.

[VOOM] Re: Why do we need duplicate channels wasting bandwidth?

She would still get them, same as she see's the HD's now.
Although she's not seeing true HD.
The post didn't say get rid of SD channels, it was why carry the
duplicate SD version of the HD channel. With I guess the exception of
Discovery IMO

Definetly fix that for her, she can view all on her SD set...

HD/SD different content

One reason is that sometimes the HD and the SD channel have different content. It is never true for HBO and the other movie channels. I could do without the duplicates there. But some of the other more show oriented channels have different programs playing. I've seen this on Discovery and DiscoveryHD. My local networks do this too (although I can't see that on VooM, because we only get the local digitals, but I can see it on my internal digital receiver because I get both with my small set top ant).

Scotty said:

Scotty,
Discovery HD (Theater) is not the same channel as Discovery, and BravoHD+ is not an HD version of Bravo. These two channels show original HD programming different from their SD counterparts. (I don't think sivagame had these channels in mind when asking the question.) Other channels like HBO, HBOW, ESPN, TNT, Cinemax, Starz, Encore, etc. indeed show the exact same programming on their SD and HD channels.

Robert Heitner, sounds like your SD TV set is connected via Component (or DVI) and the resolution mode is set Native. You should either change to S-video or composite cables, or you should change the STB resolution mode to 480p or 480i, whatever your SD TV set supports. And you should be able to watch ALL channels!

Agreed, if this is a contract issue I still don't see the reason for having it. If HBO says to Voom, or whatever provider. "Ok we will sell you the rights to show HBO content, BUT you must offer Hbo, Hbo2, Hbo Comedy, Hbo Family, their West channels, and you get the 2 HD channels for $$$$ money a year" Fine... but why can't Voom say, thanks for the feed, however our transponders are only going to show HBO-HD, HBOW-HD, HBO2, HBO C, and HBO F ?? Take all the duplicate channels off and increase the bandwidth for all HD channels...

The PQ will be instantely noticeable, and SD TVs won't miss anything because the Motorola boxes do a decent job of up/down converting. I completely agree with this poster. I thought that while Voom HAS to buy into all the channels, the reason they show them is to say:

We have X amount of HD!! More than anyone! With X amount of standards not bad huh? Like a marketing ploy, which I could care less for, I'd rather have the best looking HD channels than the most amount of duplicates.

Voom can nix, ESPN standard, HBO and HBOW, Showtime and W, 2 Cinemax Channels, 1 TMC, 2 Starz, and TNT, and redistribute bandwidth, and probably still add 1 more HD channel. Let's start a petition!! Wilt listen to us!

They aren't going to pay for a channel and not show it... besides, it keeps their numbers looking good in the sales pitch.

madpoet said:

Madpoet makes a good point, you don't exhaust resources purchasing content that you have no intent of using. Yes maximizing bandwidth is important, but it shouldn't be done at the expense of Voom's liquidity. If Voom wants to be a long term player in the satellite industry, then exhausting their liquidity on non-incoming producing assets is not an option.

I agree... disspence with the duplicates... besides their are still at least 1 movie channel from each of the providers that we are not getting (several from Starz/Encore)... not to mention the west coast feeds we're missing...
