Recently, my roommate recorded a movie onto his DVR that I would like to record to my computer. Would it be possible for me to move his DVR into my room (which has the computer) and still be able to watch what is recorded on his DVR without having a satellite signal going to the receiver? I know you can do that with Dish Network's DVR, but DirecTV's has all that setup stuff come on after resetting or unplugging the receiver. If not, could I just move the "Satellite In" cable from my receiver to his and make it work that way? Thanks for any help with this!

Nope I don't think you can. Someone here tho may be able to tell you a shortcut when the reciever is starting to by-pass the setup but I don't know of one.

I know I could watch recorded content on my D* HD-Tivo, but have never tried with any of the D* branded receivers. I thought I had read you could though...

It depends on the receiver. The R series you can't that I know of.

The HR series had some software changes that "may" allow it. From what I read, it worked sometimes and not other times.

Tivo I think you can.
