What can we expect from Dish at CES?

and how would that work, exactly? geostationary orbits are at a specific altitude (26K miles, IIRC) and only at the equator. Any low-orbit satellites would circle the globe faster than the rotation of the earth and not remain within the confines of the US. There would have to be thousands of satellites in orbit to ensure complete coverage over the US at any given time.

yes but elon is in the sat launch business AND the sat build business. many thousands of low cost sats in low orbit. coverage wouldnt be just for the us, its for the entire worlld.

no matter how cheap these satellites are they all need to be launched. thousands of launches would be cost prohibitive, no matter how many billions of dollars elon has to spend...let alone the environmental impact of thousands of launches in a short span of time.

this isn't even getting into the political aspects of foreign satellites flying over unfriendly countries' airspace like North Korea or Russia.

Then there is already the existing space junk problem that would be exponentially exacerbated with thousands more satellites crowding the LEO

And Musk has yet to build any of those sats and get their orbits approved. Not to mention the ground based hardware that would be needed.

Hopper 3 could be the last DVR that DISH produces, as most of the content will be delivered by on demand and streaming platforms, and satellite/cable TV might be obsolete in 2 or 3 years. Hopper is quite capable of lasting that long and is already equipped to handle on demand content. Since they have added Youtube, Vevo etc, they already support live streams and could add more apps in the future. DISH already admitted that streaming would be bigger soon. It is unfortunate that not all of the US has good broadband speeds enough to support this transition, otherwise, this transition would have already accelerated.

No way. Compared to Europe, our hard wire system is nothing. Compared to Europe our wireless is primitive.
Outside of urban and suburban centers, high speed internet is virtually unavailable.
Satellite TV isn't going anywhere.

The way I see it, I am being punished for choosing a particular location in which to reside.
And broadband has many meanings.
in rural areas high speed is 3X1......Where I live that is so slow, Time Warner doesn't offer such a service.

elon is a busy fellow. launching freight to ISS, while preparing for launching humans to ISS, preparing for sending the first human capable lander to mars. there are reports it will make a round trip, with samples of mars. this is all in prep for a human trip in his planned 10 yearss.

then we have tube travel a 800 mph bus like service, all across the country......

building it will cost a fortune, a great infrastructure project.....

the internet plan, wellelon must be working too much....how many great ideas can he run at one time.

I pay Cox $78 per month for 50Mbps now, which is more than I pay Dish monthly. I can't imagine what Musk will want for his satellite service. Maybe if Cox had some competition, but ATT is almost as expensive for much less Mbps.

AT&T GigaPower lines have just been installed in our neighborhood. At the very least, I can use them to negotiate a better rate from Comcast.

We just dropped down from 50 to 25 with Charter because they raised their rates quite alot. If I am streaming with my Slingbox (Not local streaming) you can tell if you try to stream from Youtube or somewhere with a laptop and/or if using the Echo to stream music. Pages with video commercials that start when you load the page load slower. Echo will actually break up or stutter music sometimes. Never even considered what we were using with 50Mb.

We are also on Charter internet(NE VT).50MB is their minimum they will sell us.Sixty bucks a month.On a side note I had to call them the other day about the cable wire that had become loose and was drooping over the driveway.Not only did I get right through on the phone I talked to someone in the States and it was fixed that day!I was in shock!

If I don't go then they might announce something big. But to be honest the only reason I go is for FaceTime with the people from the industry. If it wasn't for that then I wouldn't go.
