Having lost the History channel on FTA, I am considering the Dish Welcome Pack. I want to have my own equipment so I'm not tied to a contract. I understand I need at least a 311 receiver and preferably a 211 for the HD locals and recording. What dish would I need for the Welcome Pack w/locals for my area? I do have an old pizza dish with a single LNB. Zip is 13681. Thanks for any info!

You would most likely need a 1000.4 antenna to pull in locals for your area as well as a 211 receiver. Based on where you are located, it sounds like you are on the eastern arc and would need Mpeg 4 only (HD) equipment. If you'd like, we can look into setting up an activation only account which will not require a 24 month agreement. Just send me a PM.

Your locals arent on satellite in HD but you can hook up an antenna to the 211k to record OTA.
There is a one time $40 fee to activate the hard drive option on the 211k (the 311 has no option)
Dish 500 aimed at 110/119 would work fine.
Both receivers have a 44 hour guide. The 211 when a HDD is added gives you the 9 day guide (ono 119)
Most of the Welcome Pack stations (the main stations) are on 119 so the single LNB dish would work.

Thank you Iceberg, I wasn't a 100% sure as to which specific city his locals are from. I noticed that he's from north of upstate New York on upper right hand corner of his post. I didn't actually notice his Zipcode in the post or I would have checked his DMA to see which sats his locals are pulled from. I'll keep a closer eye on the posts as I read them.

Larobpra,

I just setup the exact same thing using a VIP211K and a Dish 500 with the DP Pro LNB. I agree the Welcome Pack is the best value to get History back. I just setup the dish today and was going to use the Eastern Arc dish but could not get it to work.

Best of Success!

Depending on how you obtain your receiver determines whether you have an activation fee charged are not. If your receiver is not activated, you can only get PI channels which are mostly info channels plus a couple of other fta channels, not welcome pack channels.

huh?
If the receiver is owned there is no activation fee. Dish sets you up on an "advance pay" account which means you pay to play (or view).
As example my billing cycle is the 13th to the 12th. The bill I just got shows Feb 13-Mar 12 as the time frame. Its due the 12th. If I dont pay by the 12th the acct gets shut off.
