When to switch an annual package to monthly

Any idea on the best time to switch from an annual base package to one with a monthly charge? I know the auto pay occurs in January every year, but the charge itself is posted right after Christmas.

I've been on an annual package for a long time, but it keeps me from from getting any other discounts and is a pretty big chunk of change every year. Just don't want to lose any part of the discount by switching early.
